I really really wish this worked more consistently, good or bad. I've only had this for a short while and it scores points for being a very cute item, after a month it's finicky.Pros:- cute- nice finish- caterpillar material is decentCons:- after a month, the latch sometimes pops. I can go as much as 4 or 5 cycles without it popping" until I manually unlatch and reset the worm again. I don't know if the worm's positioning has anything to do with it.- Worm can be tempermental to push back in, tends to lean forward which may cause more latch failures. I typically get better odds of popping when I try to push the worm back in toward the back/standing than when having a more forward lean- music can have a tinny vibration to it wich maybe the "distortion" other reviewers complained about. Didn't bug me that much....not more than he finicky latchI have to check and see if it's too late to return but I really debate this. It's kinda working and my kids love love love this...I'm not sure the next one would work any better since the internal mechanisms are simple and leave little variance for error. I bought this for my daughter with autism because she seems to have quite a love of Jack in the boxes all of the sudden but was highly disappointed the first day. It worked fine for the first few hours but now will not open no matter how long you crank it.If you're buying this as a decoration it's fine but don't buy it as a child's toy. Overall, 4 stars. I'm knocking one off because the "pop goes the weasel" doesn't line up with the actual "pop" so it's fairly anticlimactic. Luckily, Kiddo doesn't notice and has more fun pushing the little tab that released the lid more than turning the handle on the side. Go figure LO discovers the work around. (Future engineer???) Durability - the walls seem a little on the thinner side so I'm not sure about how it will hold up long-term. And the spring for the Hungry Caterpillar is a little wonky. I bought this for my 1 year old as a birthday gift. It came two days before his birthday, so it stayed in the box it shipped in in my closet. My son hadn't been playing with it for more than an hour or two when it broke....I heard something snap when he was turning the crank. I gave this to my grandson for his birthday with a hungry caterpillar theme. He opened it with delight to be devastated that it did not work. I ordered a replacement and have to go to the trouble of shipping it back. Okay, shipping is free, so I do that. We get the second one and the hook was sticking so it wouldn’t pop open. We decided we’d keep it anyway because he wanted to keep it and carry it around not understanding how it’s supposed to work. It stopped playing music after one hour. Total pice of garbage. It broke and wouldn’t “pop” open with the crank anymore after about the 3rd or 4th time. Even after it wouldn’t open when you crank the handle you could still manually pull the catch and it would open. Unfortunately even that quit working shortly after. This is super super cute. Unfortunately, it didn't work long. As you turn the handle its making a metal scratching sound and the trap door only opens once in a while, not every time -yes, I close it correctly with the latch and everything. Such a rubbish buy and appalling quality! Do your kids a favour and do not buy. The mechanism is really flimsy, the caterpillar inside the box stank of stale water and to make things worse there was a really sharp bit of metal sticking out at the base as not cut properly. This toy has brought hours of fun to all my children and secretly me too. The little handle is turned at whatever speed you like but the music matches your speed in its tempo. At a specific time the Caterpillar jumps up and of course everyone laughs. The quality is absolulty lovely with the Caterpillar being fabric and the box a tough and sturdy metal. Read more
