I bought the deep violet color. I have a darker brown hair and I had to buy a second box of dye and do a second application before it showed like the box. The first time it was more like highlights in my hair. The violet color is only noticeable in the sunlight/outdoors if you already have darker hair. I'm a Stylist and tried this color to see if the Red would remain in the hair after washing. I used it two times in a row 6 weeks apart to cover some silver coming in around the hair line around my face. I was horrified to notice that my hair fell out in a huge circle in the crown of my head. I have very thick hair and when the stylist I go to does cut my hair about every 6 weeks because I have a short razor cut she always compliments on how thick my hair is. My daughter mentioned that I looked like I had a bald spot in the back of my head. I told her it's the way I sleep on that side of my head at night I had not styled my hair that day yet. However I took a shower and blew dry my hair and low and behold right in the back of my head was a huge bald spot. I can feel stubbles of the hair trying to grow back in but in the mean while I'm stuck trying to cover this bald spot and I am furious with this product. The color is a nice rich red, and it does not wash out like most reds will. I highly recommend you use this product with caution and watch for hair loss after continued use. My hair grows very fast which is why I used it 6 weeks apart, but I will never buy or use this product ever again. I am so embarrassed having this huge bald spot in the middle of my head the crown area. If I were not a stylist I would be at a loss at how to fix my hair to cover it up for the most part, but the circle of hair loss is so big that some bald does show through no matter how I style my hair. I do not recommend this product for anyone, just because it has the Vidal Sassoon name on the product does not mean that you will not experience hair loss. Beware and use with caution. Works for me, I am absolutely enthralled with this hair coloring series, it is exactly what I've been looking for. So let me explain, I can see why some others may say it is not for them because it may not show up enough indoors or just under special lighting. That's why I love it, I don't actually want bright purple hair that people stare at, I'd much prefer the subtlety and demure quiet kind of attention. This while completely covering my grays turns my hair a dark dark purple and in the light you can detect how deliciously grape it is, therefore I can walk around with my purple hair and wear it like a woman wears sexy underwear, you don't get to show it off but it makes you feel good just knowing. Well it makes me feel good just knowing my hair is purple and I can prove it if I have to. So it's a win win for me I get to cover my grays and have my desired color. As for fading I notice with each washing it does get lighter, so I suggest not washing as often. For me by the time it starts to fade too much the grays are back anyway and time to reapply. Vidal Sassoon's Deep Velvet Violet is the only hair dye that actually turns my hair a beautiful dark plum color. Every other over the counter dye this shade turns my hair a harsh medium red with dark red hair streaked here and there. I couldn't find it in my local stores for the past year and a half. I spent six months using all the other brands and didn't dye my hair again for almost a year until I found it on Amazon! My only complaints are it does fade fast, but that's to be expected with these shades, and it smells so strong when initially using it. I was looking to dye my hair purple when I found this. It looks like a beautiful purple on the box, and they even call it midnight "amethyst." I had dark brown hair and after using this product, my hair was BRIGHT red. I tried using the same dye again to see if it would look more purple the second time. The second time, I bought 2 boxes because one box was barely enough to cover my hair the first time. After mixing the dye for both boxes, I noticed that the 2 bottles with the dye inside were completely different colors! One looked like a dark brown, and the other was purple. Not sure what was wrong with one of the boxes. I kept the red color on for a few months and when I dyed my hair back (at a salon not myself) to my natural color, the red completely shined through. Update: its now mid December and the color looks great still except the roots of course are grown out. WOW!! WHY did no one tell me bout this stuff...luv luv it.. Hope the color stays nice and not fade out too soon, but as for dyeing process, it was great. I didnt gag from to much toxic smell, the dye went on easy not a lot of tangles, and one bottle i was able to do all my hair. I have waist long hair that tangles easy and rinsing the dye out my hair was soft and i didnt have clumps of hair falling out like the last brand did. I have been using this brand and color on my hair for several years and it's a good quality hair color. The color itself is very pretty, I do get a lot of compliments on it. The thing I love about red hair color is that it continues to fade into different shades of red that too are pretty. I tend to let my hair go for quite a while before I recolor it. I do it every eight weeks approximately. I do have some grays coming in mostly around my forehead line if it wasn't for that I could probably go longer. I've just recently had to stop buying it on Amazon because I couldn't find it in the stores anymore and it is a little bit more expensive but I still feel like it's worth it. Read more

Update 3 weeks after dyeing: I just attached an outdoor picture of my daughter's hair almost 3 weeks after dyeing. Hopefully, it helps to see how well the dye lasts. It still looks good. She used the recommended conditioners in the box to maintain her hair colour.Old Review: My daughter is happy with the colour runway red. The colour is a little shiny. My daughter and I have the same hair colour, so I put our hair side by side for you to get a before and after look. Our hair is brown.She soaked the ends of her hair for an hour in the dye, which is longer than the instructions state. She didn't bleach her hair or anything. We are not at all experienced in doing this, but it turned out well following the paper insert instructions in the box on our first attempt. Read more

Good color pay off, it is very red. I seen some people complain about the smell but it is one of the best smelling box dyes I've used. Maybe it's because I come from the olden days when it used to smell only of chemicals but I think if you have reasonable expectations of a box dye the smell should be fine.Update (Aug 27): My hair still has red in it after so many months, added a pic. I only use shampoo on my sculp but regardless this is the only red I've used that doesn't immediately disappear. Read more

I found the colour turned out more like a cinnamon - more orange/red. I was looking for chocolate brown -more of a darker brown just like the picture on the box. It is not like the pic on the box. I double checked the code on the colour matched the code on the box. Not happy with this colour. Read more
