Updated as of 12/5/2020:I have known that I have the MTHFR gene mutation for about 10 years now. Even after diagnosis, I was using a few other B-complexes which I though were o.k. for my condition, but I did not realize that the B6 was not methylated. Turns out B6 has to be in the form of Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate, NOT Pyroxidine, to be more bioavailable to those who have MTHFR and do not methylate properly. I never knew that until about 3 years ago; the doctor I tested with didn't explain that part. After this discovery, I researched various B-complex formulas, and picked this one. I also wanted a B-complex that had methylated folic acid and that did not have a super high dose of methylcobalamin (B12), since my blood was testing high for B12 already. This formula fit the bill very well.A few other tips:1) The amount of methylated folic acid per capsule here is low (400mcg). If you only take one capsule per day, I would also recommend taking additional methyl-folate if you do not methylate. However, please first discuss with your chosen physician, if possible.2) If you take B6 in its methylated form of Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate (a.k.a. P5P), you also need to take magnesium so that the P5P pathway will work properly. .Without at least some magnesium to work with, you may end up feeling tired and with lower energy, which is probably not what you want.3) B6 - along with certain co-factors like magnesium, zinc, vitamin-C, and folate, is necessary for the production of certain neurotransmitters like GABA and norepinephrine, as well as for the conversion of tryptophan or 5-HTP into serotonin. So you may want to consider taking some of these additional co-factors to enhance your results with this product (only folate is included in this product, you would have to buy the rest separately). Also note: Tyrosine is also required for the synthesis of dopamine, but I have not tried taking that yet.I believe I have been low in neurotransmitter production, and my nervous system has been a mess, due to a 12-year highly stressful job and the resulting sky-high cortisol levels (Thankfully, I am no longer at the job!). It's been getting better slowly now.....it takes time and it's also helpful to decrease your sugar intake.4) B6 and zinc are both needed for the production of pancreatic enzymes and hydrochloric acid, so if you have low stomach acid / poor digestion, this may help. (Zinc is not included in this formula but you may wish to add it if you are looking to help your production of digestive enzymes)In summary, this formula really helps with all the above, and it may help you too. Douglas Labs also makes a similar formula although it has some variation in it's mix. Best wishes to you.Further update since 2017: Back in 2017-2018, started taking the Thorne Basic B once a day plus an additional 50mg -100mg of P5P. Sometimes I would miss a day of both, I'm not perfect :). Eventually I got more disciplined and was taking the Basic B twice a day. I felt that was working better for me. Overall I can say for sure that the combo has helped to calm down my nervous system. I even went through some serious surgeries and medical procedures (extremely stressful) in 2017 and 2018, and in the past I would be a nervous wreck 24/7 and would not be able to calm down. However, I no longer get that uncontrollable anxiety anymore, although there can be some days where I can still fall into a depressive state. Magnesium powder or capsules have also helped keep me calmer (at bedtime), and I have taken some Skullcap, Ashwagandha, and/or Passionflower at times to further calm myself down as needed.Since 2018 I have also tried other methylated B-complex formulas like MethylPro, Douglas Labs, Pure Encapsulations, Nordic Naturals, and Metabolic Maintenance - just to experiment. However I keep returning to this one because it seems to work the best for my physiology. Together with the P5P, this has been like a lifeline for me. Read more
This is a very high-quality brand and their Basic B Complex is fabulous - I've been using it for years. But, I've recently switched to Nutritional Yeast b/c it's chock-full of of the B Complex (I've even gotten a slight niacin flush from it), b/c I found out that Nutritional Yeast used to be the go-to B supplement before vitamins were the be all and end all they've become these last couple/few decades. I find the yeast to be awesome, and I mix it into hot chicken broth and it's usually how I start my day. (I do what I can to minimize the number of pills I pop every day - it gets annoying after a while having to swallow so many pills, you know?). But back to B-complex vitamins, if you prefer to take it in pill-form, this is THE one I'd recommend. Hands down. Read more
After using another brand for last 18 months, I learned the problems around pyridoxine which in effect mean you are not getting any B6. See photo. This is the only B-complex I've found that has the right form of B-6 and none of the wrong form. Read more
We started our adult autistic son on this methylated vitamin 4 weeks ago. My wife did not even know that I had switched out his regular Costco B Vitamin. She was the first to tell me that out son has been "different", much more active, eyes made better contact, happier. We will keep with this product and maybe report back in6 months Read more
I use this b-complex or the Douglas labs b-complex alternating using the Thorne b-complex primarily with good results. I have a mthfr c677t variation and I don't tolerate methyl folate or methyl cobalamin very well. Thorn b-complex caused minimal issues for me. I cannot use quatrifolic without going bonkers, and the Douglas labs b-complex is intense but works very well, like some have said it works like a weaker version of deplin. I've used Thorne b-complex for maybe a year and only needed to stop a couple times for about a week each time. I will continue buying this in the future. Read more
Allergic Reaction for me! 10 mins after taking my face and eventually whole body became flushed and hot, and broke out in hives. Benedryl knocked it out and I even tried again thinking it may have been something else but same reaction occurred exactly the same way. Not for me! Read more
This product contains a TON of niacin. Even after reading labels closely before buying, following directions, this product led to a serious allergic reaction. The amount of niacin causes this (and it’s an absurd amount in the supplement). Wouldn’t recommend and would caution those to ensure you’ve read all labels before buying. Read more
These were recommended to me from my doctor to help with fatigue! These are one of the few things that have ever made a dent in my chronic fatigue and I have taken these for a few years now.One thing I do is to take about 1/3 of the pills and put them into a smaller container that I open everyday. When too much moisture gets into the bottle from opening every day, the color/smell of the pills start to change a little once you’re getting to the last few, which to me, says they use fewer preservatives and unnecessary additions. I’ve never had an issue taking those last few but just something to keep in mind! Read more
An excellent quality B complex, and I have tried a fair few over the last couple of years, some rubbish quality and some with the wrong ratio of various B vitamins (too much B12 for daily use, too little Thiamine, synthetic folic acid which I can’t take. The list goes on...)This seems to have the right balance of most of the B vitamins, though I do top up with extra B5 (Pantothenic acid) and B12 on occasion but these amounts vary depending on my changing needs, so I like this as a daily foundation supplement. The capsule looks slightly larger than average but I find it easy to swallow with water. I take it with breakfast and within an hour or so it helps to lift my fatigue a little. It’s a natural source of energy, unlike an uncomfortable buzzy boost from caffeine.I only take one a day. It does say you can take up to 3 but I have not yet tried this.I trust Thorne as I have used a few of their different products and found them all to be effective. I’d definitely buy this again, but am also going to try their Stress B complex to compare. Read more
These were not suitable for me as gave me very bad headaches and being soft capsules could not just break in halfThere were two ingredients that may have been an issue for me so was advised to try the Holland and Barrett B complex which are solid capsule so Im currently trying jus half will update this review if I can if I have same prob with diff brand incase it helps otherIt is prob not fault of this brand just that they do not suit me personally so don't be put of buying but think you have to try to find what suits you and if there are any side effects as there were for meMy health is poor so may not tolerate things as well as I used to Read more
I never suffer with headaches but literally as soon as I started these my head began to throb everywhere.Even pains in my heart. I took them for a few days; and the pain continued so stopped for a few days, pain went, tried again to see if it was the pills and yes the pain came back.Clearly there’s something extremely potent in these pills which I will not be using again. A waste of £23 pounds. Read more
These are hands down the best b-vitamins I’ve taken. I’ve got SIBO and suffer from a B-Vitamin deficiency. Without these, I can’t function properly throughout the day and my nails and hair are brittle. I also seem to react better to stress when I’m taking them. I’ve tried other supplements, including the ‘stress complex’ from the same brand. But they’re just not as effective. Read more
This is a good product and has very high levels of b12. However, I would not recommend this as a general B vitamin complex unless you understand your genetics. Specifically your need for methyl donors as dictated by your COMT and VDR SNPs. The levels of methyl donors are high and can easily cause overmethylation symptoms after just a couple of days of consecutive use. The Stress version of B vitamins from Thorne may be better suited for daily use for these individuals but even still there are other products on the market with a better balance. Read more
