Our baby was constantly tumbling on our wood floors and getting bruised up, I was skeptical to try something like this because I thought it wouldn't stand up to pet claws walking all over it every day. I was pleased to see that it has sort of a bumpy texture on one side with a layer of some kind of protectant, which has kept the foam safe from spills and pets for the past 3 months that we've had them. A different popular brand of baby mat that we also purchased didn't have this feature, and we ended up returning them because they were destroyed within a month. These tiles are smaller than I was expecting though, so please check the size and consider what space you need it for, one package covers maybe a 2x3 area but we ended up purchasing several packages and have been happy with them.
