I'm not a young person. When I look into my trusty old 2X mirror, I see more than enough to allow me to apply whatever needs applying and move on, in my routine. This mirror is rated 5X, that is to say, five times the normal size and magnification of your face, with all flaws contained therein. At that magnification, I look like I'm dying. Everyone tells me I have wonderful skin for my age. They're right. I really do. I've worked hard for it, for years and years, but not according to this thing. According to this mirror, I may already be dead. So, on the one hand, this mirror does what it is supposed to do. It aids in the little grooming tasks, that list of chores we've all got to march our way through, each day, if we want to look our best. The light is excellent, not blinding. The magnification is illuminating, to say the least. The hinge is loose enough to move freely but tight enough to keep the mirror in place, at whatever angle you've set for optimal use. The sensor feature is amazing and represents exactly the kind of innovative design I have come to expect from simplehuman branded products over the years. Overall, it is an excellent option. However, there are a couple of flaws. First, the price is far too high. There are quite a lot of options for a decent quality make-up mirror with illumination. Some are, indeed, blinding, but most aren't. You can find a good one for well under one-hundred dollars. I've seen pretty decent illuminated models, with an on/off switch, not as good as this but still quite good, for around fifty dollars. So, I have to wonder why this costs so much, as compared to the others on the market. I'm sorry to say, I really can't tell enough of a difference between this and an eighty dollar model I tested, to tell you why. If the addition of a simple sensor, removing the need for me to push a simple button to turn the unit on or off, is the reason for that price difference, then it isn't worth it. I can push a button rather easily and having the thing turn on every time a cat walks in front of it is actually kind of annoying.Beyond price, assuming that the price would not be of issue for anyone genuinely considering buying this, the only real problem is that not all of us really want to know how bad we look when magnified to this degree. For an actress, this would be the perfect mirror. For a perfectly beautiful twenty year old, who has never spent a day in sunlight, this would be the perfect mirror. For me, it's depressing. The youngest person in the house is using it now, as I couldn't take it any longer, and loves it. Her compliments on the quality of the magnification of her face have not ceased in days. But here's the kicker. She has significant vision problems, a degenerative condition in her eyes, which makes it very difficult to see up close. This mirror is just what the doctor ordered, quite literally, for her. So, for a person losing their eyesight this is great. If that person happens to be very young and very beautiful, all the better. To summarize: For a young, attractive person, a 5X mirror with excellent lighting will be greatly appreciated and this is a truly wonderful option. For a person losing their vision, this is a literal gift from God. It can make all the difference in aiding a person with ailing vision to see what they can no longer see. For that, I say this is worth it. I think this should be the go-to mirror for anyone with waning vision. However, again, for anyone else, this is actually a depressing thing to have around. It is tempting to look at it, tempting to walk by, taking a glance, tempting to hover over while examining flaws. It is not a thing I would recommend for the average person, absent a vision problem, for this specific reason. We simply weren't meant to be able to see our faces magnified to such horrific clarity. This is a Five Star mirror for a person with waning vision. This is a Five Star mirror for a person who is exceptionally beautiful. This is a Three Star mirror for a woman of a certain age. As such, I have averaged and given it Four Stars. When deciding what will work best for you, I recommend that you ask yourself a couple of specific questions about how it will be used, where it will be kept, how well you see, how much you will use it. Given the cost and exceptionally clear magnification, if this will be used to aid a person with low-vision, this is a no-brainer, just get it. If you will be using it to apply make-up and you can see pretty well, this is too much money and too much mirror. A 3X will do nicely, or even a 2X. If it will be kept in a locked bathroom, great. If it will be kept on a surface where animals like to climb, not so great. They could knock it down, of course, but, even if they are very well behaved, the cat set this off a few times and it had to be moved, because it woke me up. If you are like my best friend, a man who is obsessed with his face, looks at it constantly, can't pass a window without taking a peek and primping, then this is the mirror for you. If you are like me and it is one and done, with a routine that takes less than twenty minutes and does not consume your mind for the rest of the day, then, again, this is too much mirror for you.I hope I've helped you to clarify some of this, in your search for the right mirror. Good luck in finding it and, please, please, remember that no one can see you that well. The person with the best vision in the room can't see you as clearly as any magnifying mirror can allow you to see yourself. You are far more beautiful than you feel when you look into a make-up mirror. Don't forget that. Don't think that this is an accurate reflection of your face. I guarantee you it is not. Read more

Based on the comments in the negative reviews I waited a significant amount of time before I wrote this review. I wanted to see if I experienced the same issues. This mirror is excellent. It was mentioned how the mirror will go on and off due to the sensor. Some people found this irritating. Yes, when you look away the lights go off but quickly go back on when you face it again. The sensor, for me, was a non issue. Another issue was the charge not holding. The charge in my mirror held fine. What I like about the mirror is the 8 inch size of the mirror. It's not too small and you can see your entire face. The lighting is also very good. I did a lot of research before making this purchase and am happy with the result. It's an expensive mirror so my expectations were high. Happy to say that my expectations were met. Read more

Ok girls I was skeptical about ordering this mirror after seeing reviews that said it runs off prematurely or it only turns on if you’re really close to it . Well I learned that in these cases the sensor at the top is probably just dirty. Also there is a power button on the bottom of the mirror that can use to reset it. All that being said I want everyone to know that THIS MiIRROR Is AWESOME, I love it ,love it ,love it!!!! Also you can adjust the light brightness.. if you have a problem, just call customer service it’s most often an easy fix Read more

This is a outstanding mirror! With that being said the best part of Simplehuman is their warranty department! This mirror came with a 5 year warranty and the cost of mirror was $199. After 2.5 years it was not holding a charge any longer. I contacted Amazon who gave me the contact info for Simplehuman - I reached out to them and they responded the same day! They had me send it to them and indicated if they could not repair they would send me a new one. Within 2 days of receiving it back from me they contacted me that they determined it had a defect and sent me a new mirror!! That is the best customer service that I have ever had from any manufacturer. Highly recommend - 10 stars! Read more

While the mirror itself is good and when the light is on it is great for applying makeup, especially if you don't have the best lighting. My issue with the product is that the sensor to turn the light on is absolute crap. It NEVER stays on even if I'm right in front of it and most of the time I have to tap the sensor several times for it to come on in the first place. It has been like this from the very beginning. For a little while I put apiece of cardboard on the sensor to make it stay on while I used it to apply my makeup but even that now does not work well. It still shuts off the light randomly. For the crazy high price, this mirror is a junk. Read more

This pricey mirror is well worth it if it falls within your budget. One of the first things I noticed was the sensor light which comes on when your sit in front of it. The light and magnification is amazing. When you first sit down you realize you don't look that good. :) Applying makeup, tweezing, eyebrows, eyeliner - all goes on meticulously when using this mirror. Highly recommend. Read more

In less than 5 months, this mirror has stopped working properly. The power indicator found around the base of mirror won't change from red. The mirror won't take a charge. It no longer lights up. I would like to start a return on this product, as it is quite expensive! What are my next steps? Read more

I broke my last simplehuman mirror. I bought and returned 5 mirrors before I broke down and bought this. Great lighting and 5x magnification is nice. The sensor seems to have gotten better than the last model. The rose gold is nice and toned down and I love that you can extend it if needed. Read more

I'm delighted with my simplehuman sensor mirror! The magnification and lighting are just right .. no more smudged mascara and straggly brows (or errant whiskers). And it looks really good! I've had it nearly six weeks and haven't needed to recharge it yet Read more

As I should have expected by reading other reviews these items seem to always have some defect. Mine doesn’t turn off by itself when I walk away. I am keeping it because I do love the clarity of the mirror and the quality of the light, however it is absolutely shocking that at this price point they don’t work perfectly. Based on other reviews it seems that you may exchange it and get one with a bigger problem and I don’t have the energy for this process.I recommend you consider that you will likely have trouble with this item working as expected based on my experience and what many other reviewers have written here... Over the past few weeks I have had three of these mirrors:- The first one’s sensor didn’t work (meaning the mirror never switched itself off)- The second one's sensor did work, but the mirror never fully switched itself off anyway (when it was “off” the lights still faintly glowed, which was very noticeable in a dark room)- The third one seems to work for now (fingers crossed!)I normally wouldn’t mind so much, but when I’m paying such an extortionate amount for a mirror, I do expect it to be working.SimpleHuman really need to step their quality control up (or lower their prices).Update: as it turns out, my third mirror only works when plugged in. Everytime I take it off charge (even after leaving it plugged it for several hours) the battery instantly dies. Completely ridiculous. Can’t give this more than one star I’m afraid, as much as I wanted to love it. Read more

We just had our bathroom redone, so wanted a good, premium shaving/beauty mirror, so stumped up the extra cash for a simplehuman version. The quality, build, finish and light are all absolutely top-quality, typical of other simplehuman-design products. Nice weighty base, beautifully even and white-balanced beauty light, good battery life and distortion-free mirror. However, this product loses a star for me as the proximity sensor (that little black bar at the top) makes it unsuitable for bathroom use. It must sense heat, so whenever the shower is turned on and enough steam is produced, the light will turn on, wasting battery...not a deal-breaker, but an unfortunate design flaw that I wouldn't expect from simplehuman. I've had this mirror for a while now in my badly-lit dressing room. I was worried that it was a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a mirror but having had this for months there's no way I would part with it now! Great for skin-care, make-up (and even an emergency splinter removal!! Lol). Particularly essential for over 50's like me when your eyesight is going! The rechargeable battery makes it very easy to charge up overnight every now and then, but the charge lasts for weeks. Read more
