These are kind of a pain to install just because the instructions are unnecessarily detailed/complicated. It took me maybe 10mins to install 2 locks, and 8 of those mins was following the instructions on the first lock. Once installed, theyre great locks that keep the cabinets closed tight (no pull/push banging!) and easy to unlock with the "key." The key is just a strong magnet, so its easily stored on the fridge or even on the metal stud framing of a window. The locks dont get pushed and worn down like the plastic hook latches, and theres no gap that baby can open and learn how to undo the lock. One tip, though, add a small sticker or other marker the same color as your cabinet where the key should be placed to open, it makes it less frustrating to try and find the right spot, especially after you first install it or when youre dealing with a screaming toddler and trying to clean up a spill. These worked perfectly for keeping the dog out of the trash cabinet. We hated the baby locks where you could open it a little and then had to stick your fingers in the crack to push down the lever. This mechanism keeps the cabinet tight with no wiggle room to crack it open. Because it is a dog, we just keep the magnetic "key" stuck on the dishwasher right next to the cabinet. It is super easy to open the lock with the key. The device also has a simple push button that allows you to deactivate the device so it stays unlocked. We keep it unlocked for our convenience when we are home and then slide the push button to lock when we go out since the dog only explores the trash when we are not home. It works perfectly for our needs and is very easy to use. Read more
I am very impressed with this product. I found the mounting to be quite straightforward. I would recommend an awl or punch to help start the screws, but any philips screwdriver that fits the screw heads is sufficient to mount these. They do come with a self adhesive hole pattern, but I did not feel it was necessary to use. You may find it does help you when you mount yours. I did adjust the tab and magnetic lock so that when I apply the magnetic key there is an audible 'click' to let me know I can open the cabinet. Truth be told, I am using these to prevent a pet from opening the trash door. The door is held close enough shut that he should not be able to gain any leverage to be able to force the cabinet door open. I was leary about ordering this, mainly due to price' but after installing it, I have no reservations whats so ever. I feel very comfortable in recommending this product for child proofing your living space. A brief description in the mechanics of the locks. The tab is mounted to the frame of you cabinet. The magnetic lock is mounted to the door/drawer. The magnetic lock has two settings chosen by a slide. Locked or not locked. When in locked, there is an spring loaded tab that extends and is engaged when the frame mounted tab. Think how your screen door works. When the lock is unlocked; the tab is recessed into the lock. The magnet key recess that tab when in use allowing it to freely pass the frame mounted tab and allowing the door to open. When the magnet is removed, the spring forces the tab to extend, making it ready to lock when the door is closed. I did test with a small rare earth magnet, and it work as good as the key. Read more
I bought four of these and three worked reasonably well. They are a great idea, but their construction is rather poor. The first three seemed to work fine, but the large piece (with the moving catch) wouldn't work once I fastened it down with the screws. It worked fine without being installed. Tightening the screws caused a binding of the moving latch. I tried shimming under the screws to relieve the binding but that didn't work. Then I tried slicing away some of the sides that seemed to be causing the binding, but that didn't work. There doesn't appear to be a way to open the unit to troubleshoot the problem. My only apparent solution is to buy more and try again. Also the slots for the screws are very close to the diameter of the screws, so there is minimal tolerance for variations in the hole locations. If you don't drill holes exactly right, there can easily be binding between the screws and the unit. A slightly wider slot would help alleviate this. Read more
Highly recommended! Our pointy-nosed greyhound figured out how to bump open the child (dog) safety lock on the garbage cabinet and decorated the kitchen in coffee grounds, potato peels, etc.. I decided to try the magnetic lock, because a friend uses them and has always been happy with them. The lock works great and keeps the dog out. To unlock, just push in on the door with the 'key' and it disengages. Then you can remove the key and open the cabinet. You can also push the toggle on the lock to disengage it if desired. We ended up putting the key on a length of string and attaching it to the drawer above the cabinet after the key was accidently dropped in the garbage and locked. We didn't have a magnet strong enough to unlock it, but removed the drawer above the cabinet to gain access. Read more
I've tried the KidCo and Mom's Choice brands of magnetic locks. Here's how they compare:Pros:- The Safety 1st locks seem to be the best built locks I've seen. Very solid.- The magnet is the strongest of those three brands (best range)- The disable switch on these locks is also the best and easiest to use- Spring loaded locking mechanism is quick to snap open and shut with a reassuring 'click'.- Can be mounted any direction.Cons:- The installation process is process is fairly easy, but not as easy as the KidCo locksOverall these locks are a great choice. Not as easy to install as the KidCo locks, but my favorite to use once they are installed. Read more
Amazing cabinet locks! I had no problems installing them. I think it took me roughly 15 min to install both locks (as far as skill level I am very handy).SIDE NOTE... I was worried about losing the unlocking magnet but I figured out that the magnets inside a computer hard drive are also strong enough to open the locking mechanism. So if you have an old computer laying around or a crashed hard drive open it up and take the magnets out and best of all those “spare keys” are free. Read more
