The Otamatone is a cute, quirky, and fun to play electronic musical toy characterized by its eighth note-shaped body, adorable moving mouth, and silly, buzzing, amusingly off-key "voice." Developed by design firm Maywa Denki, it was first released in Japan in 2009 and has been the country's best-selling musical toy ever since. Innovative, unique, and now a popular toy worldwide, the Otamatone has earned high praise from fans and the toy industry alike, including the Japan Toy Association's grand prize Japanese Toy Award in their 'High Target' toy division. How does it work? The Otamatone creates electronic tones that you can control based on the position of your finger on the touch-sensitive fretboard. Use a switch on the back to choose an octave and slide your fingers up and down to play different notes. Open the Otamatone's mouth with a squeeze to change the sound from a hum to an “ahh” and create a “Wah Wah” effect. A perfect toy for lovers of all things cute, silly, and weird, the Otamatone also makes a great gag gift, and a unique and amusing gift for violinists and other musicians. The media could not be loaded.  This amazing little device is fun and passes all annoyance tests with flying colors! As you can see here, I tested it out on my wife who, like just about everyone, can get perturbed with husbands like me. What made me one of the worlds best annoyance testers is that I’m a younger brother and got years of experience testing the patience of my older sisters. I have no hard feelings for the hours I spent locked inside of my sister’s closet. But to this day, I’m reminded of all those years I spent practicing and honing my annoyance testing craft on my poor siblings. I’m truly grateful they let me live past the 6th grade!!! Read more

You know when you're the aunt or uncle and you buy your niece or nephew an annoying toy because you think it's funny to torture your sibling, even after you've left the house? Well I did that to myself. I bought this thing for my boyfriend. It kinda sounds like the noise Jim Carrey makes in Dumb and Dumber when he makes "the most annoying sound in the world" It IS annoying as all hell, but he looooves it and it always puts a huge s***-eating grin on his face. It's easy and fun. I don't regret buying it. Read more

Otamatones are not viable as real instruments. The notes played by positions on the fret board change depending on battery level and are not uniform across models. On the non-deluxe model (this one) you can change entire notes without moving your finger, making playing on pitch impossible.Quality wise, all of the material appears like the screenshots and videos. Good rubber with minimal permanent deformation. The neck came decently bent on my model, not sure if this is a common problem. It is a really cute product and I can play few songs on it after testing the notes before every use but its inconsistencies and difficulty make it difficult to even use as a conversation piece. I bought this for my 5 year old because she saw this on YouTube and wanted to try it out......it's a cute idea, but the noise......it sounds like.....I don't even know how to describe it. A train whistle on death's door? If you're trying to annoy your family, I totally suggest this product.....for your kid to play 24 hours a day? Not so much. It seems to run through batteries like crazy- I was replacing them like DAILY. I'm glad my daughter has stopped playing with it so much because although it's really cute and simple for her to just run her finger over the buttons, it's really not a great sound LOL Read more

After using the original Otamatone before, I was excited to see a miniature version for a fraction of the price. Unfortunately the quality is also a fraction of the original. The keyboard on the miniature version is not that responsive making the experience of playing frustrating and unfun. The battery life is also not very good. If this was priced around $10-$15 I could maybe see the value but it’s not worth anything more than that. Definitely put your money towards the original if you’ve never played it before! Read more

Truly and sincerely annoying for me to listen to, but it was a Christmas gift and the recipient absolutely loves it. Came in perfect condition and plays a whole range of notes, looks really cute as well. Got a lot of laughs from the family while they tried to play Christmas carols on it. It's definitely fun to play, not quite as much fun to listen to. Read more

This little guy is a ton of fun. If you're a trained musician, it's pretty easy to pick up and play popular songs and chord progressions on an Otamatone, though, as it says on the packaging, this isn't going to hit the exact notes an actual musical instrument would. Even if you're not super well trained as a musician, you can have fun making little patterns that sound good and on top of everything, my Otomatone has been a very fun conversation piece ever since I purchased it. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my little guy! Read more

Basically a stylophone with a capacitive (touch!) keyboard, makes the same type of noises too. My kids geniunely love these (we have two), me I'm not so keen on the noise (or maybe the lack of music talent)...Would I recommend this, yes; but as a gift for someone else's kids (particularly if you aren't too fond of their parents). Works perfectly, but I would recommend you buy the larger one as this one his quite small and difficult to play. It also cannot be connected to headphones like the larger one and will annoy your roommate with the end result of having to buy the larger one anyway because you need to practise playing it. Buying the bigger one allows you to skip the middle part of buying this then buying the bigger one. Read more

The one I received was crackly and didnt work correctly no matter how much pressure I added to the fret. I also replaced the batteries and it wont produce a sound and keeps cutting off. :( I was so looking forward to this fun little thing as well! Read more

Read more
