Only difference in price and the knurling of the handle which is slightly better. It has the same exact head. They both weigh the same and are the same size. The reason why I gave it three stars is that there is almost a $30 in price from the Edwin Jagger de89. I am attaching three photos for everyone to see. I ended up sending it back, because I have the Edwin Jagger de89 in Chrome and the Ebony handle, which combined, cost about as much as the Muhle. Read more

The Muhle R89 is just too aggressive for me. It's a beautiful razor that's clearly well made, but I have fair, sensitive skin and it didn't give me a very comfortable shave. Don't get me wrong. It will give you a supremely close shave, but my skin just can't take it. Strangely enough, it has the exact same head as the Edwin Jagger DE89. Not sure why that is. Anyway, like I said the Muhle is well made, but the handle is a bit slippery when wet. It doesn't have much in the way of knurling. I think I'll stick with my Rockwell 6C, Merkur 34C, and Feather AS-D2. Read more

I waited almost a month to post this review so that I had a chance to use the razor several times. I used to have one of those razors that you had to screw at the bottom and it would open up like a butterfly where you would place the blade. This one you unscrew the handle and the top separates into two pieces and the blade goes in between. At first I thought this would be a hassle but it really isn't. I read another comment that suggested applying some vaseline to the threads of the handle so that water doesn't rot the metal. Seemed like a good idea so I did do that. The closed comb feature makes the razor slide easily across my face. I'm not sure about the open comb vs. closed comb - not that knowledgeable. I read about it a bit before making this purchase and read that closed comb is somewhat safer, so that's what I went with. I'm not necessarily the most diligent shaver (don't ask why cause I don't know but I've been known to go sideways - and that's a no-no) so closed comb seemed the smart thing to do. Despite this, I feel I get a very close shave and, more importantly my skin doesn't feel raked raw after a shave (it used to - I'm probably more heavy handed than I ought to be). So, all in all, I would recommend this razor. Read more

So the razor arrived today. I had one week of growth. I wanted to see how it tackled lots of growth so I didn’t shave until it came. Prior to this I used the Rocky Mountain Barber co safety razor and the Gillette King C safety razor.I paired the razor with a feather blade. I usually stay away from the feathers because it’s always been way too sharp, and makes me feel like my face is on fire. I usually go with Persona blades unless I have more than a week of growth. This razor paired with the feather blade was a dream to use. Every stroke was smooth. The first pass cleared out almost all of the hair. The second pass was enough for an average shave. But I like a date nite shave every time so I did I third pass against the grain. Zero burn. Not even I little bit. If you have sensitive skin, don’t be afraid to use this razor. It’s a very aggressive razor but it’s also exactly what you need. The knurling on the handle could be a bit better. It’s not slip out of your hand smooth, but not as grippy as I’d like. I’ve read about a lot guys having issues with the thread and the stem breaking off of the base plate, so I put a little Vaseline in the handle before the first use to prevent corrosion. I’m not sure if this is a great first razor, but I certainly think this is a perfect if not best second razor. Only because a more aggressive razor requires a lighter touch and if you’re coming from cartridge razors this paired with feather blades will fillet your face. If this is your first, get the King C razor and a box of persona blades since it’s more forgiving. After about 30-50 shaves. BUY THIS RAZOR and some feather blades. Read more

This is an old design, and my example looked like it was made with old tooling - a little sloppy on the fit. Still a decent product BUT for a few $ more better options are available. I purchased a Rockwell 6C for about $5 more than this - it comes with 6 customizable settings (3 base plates), good fit and finish, and 100 blades thrown in (special deal). Knowing what I know now I would go for the Rockwell. You probably won't be sorry if you purchase this one though. Read more

I started out with a much more aggressive razor and sent it back and got the R89 instead. While I preferred the butterfly clasp for cleaning, it cut me up. I have sensitive skin and porcupine-like quills for a beard/stubble. Mixing this with Feather blades, Proraso pre-shave, Proraso shave cream (or Taylor of Old Bond Street Sensitive Skin), Alum block, Clubman No Bumps Gel, and Proraso after shave have been my go-to set up. I used to get bumps all over my neck. With these products I still get some irritation as the base of my neck, otherwise I have no razor burn or bumps elsewhere, and the bumps I do get aren't terrible. If I go 3-4 days without shaving I get very little bumps. I'm usually smooth for almost 2 full days going with-across-against the grain shaving on my face. Neck is with & against.Be sure to disassemble the razor into it's three pieces and clean them after every shave. No rust or damage to the R89 since I purchased in June 2019. I'm very happy with it and highly recommend it as a first safety razor for new wet shaver. Read more

I would give it 5 stars, however, the downgrade came to one and only one issue. I've had mine for a little over a year, and recently went to change the blade. While screwing the handle back on, got down to where it would normally stop turning, but kept on turning. The thread post sheared out of the head base. I guess I expected a little more use out of it before I had to replace it. Read more

Read more

This an excellent first DE razor as it is very mild and consequently unlikely to cause nicks or cuts; it is also suitable to the more experienced shaver who, like me, has a sensitive neck that is prone to irritation; with my previous Merkur HD, itself widely regarded as a mild razor, I sometimes suffered some soreness around my neck, but with the r89 this is now entirely gone. One downside of this is that the r89 is possibly less efficient than other razors I have used, although I find using a good sharp blade such as Gillette Nacets or Astra Super Stainless helps in this regard. Finally, the Muhle r89 is a very well made razor - the chrome is of a very high standard, especially compared to my old Merkur which, although an excellent razor, definitely be looks a bit rough around the edges by comparison. All in all, an excellent razor. :-) Read more
