The reason why I purchased this item is because I googled reviews on gels for man and this one came up and the reviews looked good and what attracted me about this brand is that it doesn't have alcohol. When I received this item and tried it the next day I had this really bad and ugly looking unpleasant dry hair, I guess the word is lots of residue. I am in my 40's so my hair is not that thick anymore and this gel made my hair look more bald and I could see my scalp more. This gel left my hair in a very unpleasant way and I did not like it at all. I have tried other hair gels and thisAmerican Crew brand has been the worse. I was very surprised because supposedly it had better ingredients.What I can tell you right away is that this gel is for younger folks with newer thicker hair and if you already have thiner hair due to age this gel is definitely NOT the best choice. This review is for American Crew Firm Hold Styling Gel:I have been a happy customer of American Crew Gel for 10+ years. I have tried all different kinds of hair gels, in different price ranges, & this is the one I keep going back to time & again. I have thick hair, & this works well for me, & does not dry or flake. I like that it is alcohol free.Smell: it has a slight smell, almost like a men's cologne. Not overpowering & doesn't linger. The smell is noticeable mainly when you are squeezing it from the bottle. After its applied, & throughout the day, there is no smell at all.Hold: Just as it says- firm hold. Hair does not move & adjust the amount you need for desired stiffness. A little goes a long way- this gel is thick.Wearability: This lasts all day for me, without flaking. I apply it after washing/drying my hair in the morning & it lasts thru out the day- same great hold as the morning all day long, without having to reapply.Difference between formulas: I've purchased the light hold & firm hold. I prefer the firm hold because I use less product to get the desired result. Both had similar smells when applying, & are similar consistencies. Both are good quality gels.Size: I like buying the 33.8 oz bottle. This size bottle typically lasts a few months, & it is more economical to buy the bigger size. I've found the best prices here on Amazon so far. What I usually do is if I see a great deal on it, I will buy a few, then will be all set for a year+. I'm half Latino and European/American mix. My hair is basically black, loose curls, and I keep it short and buzzed on the side. I have quite ethnic 'horse' hair, what my mother likes to call it, and I've grew up on using hair gels. Most store-brand gels leave your hair flaky and dont have a long hold time. However, this American Crew formula is flake-free, and you can even wet it and reset it. It's the only brand of hair products I will buy, as I feel like super model with their pomades, fibers, and hair creams. I will never buy any other hair products again. I used to try some vegan stuff, and I do hope maybe one day American Crew can offer vegan, cruelty free versions of their products. But I've got about 10 different products of theirs right now in my hair styling repertoire, and each of their products are designed specifically for the look your going for. READ THE LABELS. Their descriptions of the product's performance is accurate and I can wear their products all day, and at the end of the day - my hair looks EVEN better! Somehow they managed to make it all smell very good too! Please consider looking into a leaping bunny certification so consumers like me would even buy more of your stuff! I have been a happy customer of American Crew Gel for many years but it seems to be changing or this is a generic product in a crew bottle. I've noticed the last two orders of the large bottle do not have that pleasant aroma and hold that im used to. Does anyone know why? The smaller bottle purchased at Target seems fine but the last few 33.8 oz I purchased from amazon on sale seem to be generic gel or perhaps an old product that has passed its shelf life. Read more

The hair gel works well and holds even the most stubborn, thickest hairs in place. My only complaint was with the packaging. When the gel arrived, the cap was destroyed and there was gel all over the inside of my box, making other items in the box sticky. This normally does not happen with my purchases here although it was the first time that I purchased the 13.1 oz bottle of gel. I'm not sure if this is a consistent problem with items that have the same cap, so I'm not sure if I would purchase this hair gel again. Read more
