It’s not a bad toy chest. I got it 45% off, couldn’t resist. Very well packaged, very easy to assemble. Doesn’t spam on little fingers and only took 15 mins.One issue I have is the two things that keep the lid from slamming. When you screw them on they barely reach the predrilled holes. I had to move the lid up and down and slowly screw each screw little bit at a time. The wood still cracked and split, not to terrible though.The other issue is the bottom piece is like a very thin sheet of MDF board. Seems sturdy enough for toys, I just gotta try and keep the little guy from climbing in.I’d like to get another box for my other child, I’ll probably get the same one if it goes on sale again. Where to start with this...first off, we went with it because the Melissa and Doug table + chairs were SO good. This product however just plain sucks. The super thin wood on the back split in the same place as everyone else. I have it on video, splitting further and further with every turn of the screwdriver until it was fully in place. The pilot holes were not deep or wide enough to accommodate the size of the screw. The bottom board is very thin and fragile, feels like a shaved sheet of balsa wood. No way this can last with a two-and-a-half year old cramming toys in it. Finally, the lid never closes. I stays about 1-2cm open due to the horrible hardware that was included. This item is a shameless cash grab by M&D, banking on their good name and reputation. I think we're done with their products after this. We're returning it. Purchased for a Christmas gift based on reviews and that it was a little larger than others. Nothing damaged and well packaged. Good hardware package. Assembly guidance started out well until it came to putting the lid on. You will notice in the first picture I attached that the lid is at an angle. This is not depicted in the instructions very well and not discussed in the written instructions at all, see pictures. First thing I noticed was the holes for the support hinges didn't line up with both the lid and chest when laid flat as depicted; I assumed this was a manufacturing defect. I almost drilled new holes until I read a review from 2018. Somebody did just that and everything got screwed up. You will note in the instruction pictures I have attached that the chest is depicted with the lid straight up so you would assume that is the way it should be. WRONG, WRONG WRONG. The chest is designed for the door to open no further than an angle. Both the support hinges and the cross brace in the back will not allow this but it is not intuitive in the instructions. Albeit, when you look real close on attachment image you see the lid at a slight angle, but it is easily missed. Additionally, the support hinges are very stiff as they are meant to hold the lid open yet look at the screws mounting them. They are very short and not as depicted in the instructions. I expect that after some moderate use these will eventually pull out based on the stiffness of the supports.What is most disconcerting is that The Melissa and Doug Company has known about this issue since 2018 and never did anything about it. This shows a complete lack of quality control follow up. While I have no issues with how it turned out; I like the size and look. To leave bad instructions in place for about 2 years demonstrates more interest in profit over customer satisfaction. Read more

ZERO STARS: Please, please read the negative reviews on this product! It is an absolute piece of junk!!! I read the negative reviews but pigheadedly went ahead with the purchase. My husband very carefully put it together but when it came to the hinges the screws did not hold and actually ripped out of the wood. You cannot use longer screws because the wood is so thin. So he went to the hardware store and got slightly larger diameter screws. Nope! Toy box is ruined and so is one of our only two gifts for our grandchild. Going back! What a bummer! Read more

I now own three of these wonderful toy chests. I want to buy at least 1 more. They are fantastic. All of mine are natural wood. They are gorgeous. Many of the poor reviews are from people who are not apparently skilled at putting things together. This is one of the easiest pieces of furniture I have ever put together. The directions are great. The screws are divided up nicely and even numbered. Everything lines up perfectly. Inside the side panels the have metal for the bolts to screw into (not all toy boxes have this). It makes them very sturdy. As for the complaints for the flimsy bottom, they are ridiculous. In one of my boxes, I have a 50 pound bag of rabbit food and also a 40 pound bag of horse bedding pellets. As to the so called lid issue, you need to lift the lid slightly when lining up the holes and everything lines up perfectly (see my picture that shows how far the lid is supposed to open). I think some reviewers are over tightening the bolts and this can cause damage to the wood. Screws need to be hand tightened. Also, do not fully tighten anything until the complete box is built and then fully tighten everything. The toy boxes are sturdy enough for us to sit on as well (I would not recommend standing on them though).I want to add that the entire toybox can be put together with one Phillips screwdriver. There are a lot of good things about this chest, it was easy to assemble, looks nice, the lid closes slowly and it's a great size for the price. However almsot immediately the paint on the lid chipped. The middle part of the lid is a separate thin piece of wood that flexes and when it does so it separates from the outer piece and the main chips in the seam. I had looked at this products for months and read many, many reviews before purchasing. As soon as I cut the tape on the box I got a huge whiff of a chemical smell akin to spray paint. It stunk so bad I opened it outside and let it air out in our garage. It made our whole garage smell. It’s been airing out for 5 days now and still stinks. We spend a lot of money on getting good quality toys for our little one. There is no way I’d put anything in this toxic box let alone my child’s toys. Read more

We love this toy chest. It is the perfect size. Quite large and fits a ton of toys, but not to big to take up a lot of room in our apartment. It looks very nice and functions quite well. The hinges used are quality and they allow for very easy operation. The lid stays open in any position and never comes crashing down because the hinges hold it in place. This is a important feature because the first thing my 9 month old baby did was walk up to it, open and close the lid multiple times while taking several breaks to stick his head in the toy chest and see what is in there. This toy chest is very safe so I have no worry of it hurting my curious little baby. It is also the perfect height so our 9 month old can stand up and hold onto it, operate the lid himself, and reach a few toys that are closer to the top. The wood is a good compromise between durable hardwood and lower cost particle board. I am sure it could support children who want to sit on it and maybe a light weight adult, but it is really not designed to be used as a bench.Before this toy chest came toys were everywhere. Pilling up in corners and hard to clean up at the end of the day. We needed a toy chest so onto amazon I went. I have a few other of Melissa and Doug's products and they are all made very well and our baby has loved them. I was happy to see that they make a toy chest so I have something to contain all the toys they sold me. I think this toy chest is a good price point and uses durable enough materials to last a long time. It is also nice that it comes in different colors so that you can match your decor. Building this toy chest was very easy, anyone could do it. It only used one tool and took about 20 minutes or less. After I built it I noticed that the lid did not align well and it would crash into the side of the toy chest when I closed it. So I loosened the screws, realigned the lid and then fastened the screws. Problem was solved. It also mentions in the instructions to wait until it is full assembled before you fully fasten all the screws. I found that it was important to have the chest on level ground when fastening all the screws and not have two legs on and two legs off the carpet like I did at first.I would recommend this to anyone who has a baby or child with a lot of toys. It is really nice to have a place to put all the toys at the end of the day and also control how many toys are out in the play area at one time. I look forward to using the toy chest as a teaching tool to help my son learn how to tidy up after himself. When we tried to assemble the pieces ; Part A & Part B are not probably aligned therefore pard D doesn’t slide in all the way. I contacted customer service and asked if they can just send me the two pieces that are not aligned. She replied with sorry and said no we can’t but we can replace the item for you when it backs in stock. I said do I still need to send this back to you ? It is heavy box and it is not fixable what if with the current pandemic I just get rid of this one instead of sending it back ? No replyI also told her I found this item in stock and it is available to ship at Amazon.ca ,I sent her a link as well but no response either !Bottom line don’t take a risk, don’t buy this product because if there is something wrong with it you have to carry a big Heavy box to Canada post for return.
