What a fantastic old-skool toy this is - no batteries needed! Put the 'stairs' on a solid surface, give the child the hammer, line the ball up in the top hole and away you go! They will (depending on age) have a bit of difficulty hitting the ball at first but once they get the idea, they're away! Hit the ball on the top level and it (after a bit of bashing) drops through to the second level and jams in the hole, and so on, before rolling out of the bottom ready to start again. It helps the child to aim and knock the ball through accurately, builds up their strength and co-ordination but do impose a limit on them because once hold of a hammer, with a child's natural tendency to want to hit things, they will try to hit you, their siblings, the dog and the furniture. That gives you a chance to teach them not to become violent and that it's out of order to hit things apart from specially designated toys. I know it sound a bit preachy but, believe me, this is what happens! Kids love smacking things and giving them even a small wooden hammer is license for all hell to break loose and send the pets running!Going back to basics, this is exactly what the toy does - it's basic educational fun at its simplest level, with no batteries needed, no charging and no complicated rules. Just watch that hammer! Read more

My daughter (2) has lots of fun with this; we have a similar hammer style toy that just knocks nails down into a piece of wood and she much prefers this. She gets a great kick out of hammering the ball down and watching it roll to the next level (there’s always an excited giggle when the ball drops), it’s really satisfying for her and is good at teaching hand coordination, and cause and effect. It’s a simple toy and is a decent size (approx 20cm high x 23cm width), it’s made from lightweight wood and comes with a small hammer and just one ball. It’s obviously not one of those plastic all bells and whistles toys, but from experience it’s toys like this that have more longevity and get taken out and played with more regularly than others.Overall if you’re considering one of these hammer style toys then this is a very solid choice and would make a great gift too.I’m a mum of 2 who does lots of research and reads tonnes of reviews to help me choose the best products for my family. Tested and approved by the 18-month-old youngest member of my family – who soon got the hang of it – this is a nice item. It’s robust too, well-made, and finished without rough edges or sharp corners. And – nice touch this – see how the creatures on the side are tall, middle-sized and short? On the other side they are also of those sizes, but different creatures! (What a pity there isn’t a third tall creature on the end: one-dimensional coloured circles is all we get there.)My guess is that it will become what I think of as a ‘heritage’ toy. That is, one to keep; one that will be a joy for the next generation to rediscover when visiting granny. It looks as if it won’t get too much knocked about by the first generation, or become shabby. The only parts that may not stand the test of many years are the inserted silicone rings that keep the ball from dropping through the hole without being hammered (or pushed by hand). Perhaps they will become brittle; I don’t know.Time will tell. Meanwhile it is, as I say, a nice item. Read more

The hammer is just that, a wooden hammer or mallet to strike the ball with. It needs reasonably good hand-eye coordination, and your little one will get good practice; they will also learn about cause and effect. It’s supposed to be suitable from twelve months upwards; I think that this is a bit young, as you need quite a bit of force to make the ball go through the hole, and I am not sure if a one-year-old would have enough strength. The pictures on the side of the steps are cute; I’m not 100% sure what they are, apart from the giraffe and (probably) a pig, but they’re definitely appealing. The ball is blue and the handle of the hammer is orange, both eye-catching.I think that this will be a toy to hand down, as it is robustly made and, with no moving parts, it should stand the test of time.
