I have the color 3C cool darkest brown and it is PERFECT. Very dark brown, almost black, and no red at all. None. The dye leaves my hair super shiny and doesn't look faded and lifeless even after weeks of styling and washing. I usually change my hair every few months but I've stuck with this one for way longer because I love it so much! Read more

I have lightened my hair once with another box dye, and did terrible with it. It was still brown-black with some blotchy lighter spots. I used this one and added Ardell Red Gold corrector Plus to make it extra ashy. Left it on for about 30 minutes as directed. One box was enough for medium length hair. The picture was the result under florescent light. It is significantly more lighter and a bit ashy but you do see redish undertones under the warm light. Not bad but not amazing smooth and thorough. Although that could be me not doing a great job. The second picture was when my roots grew out a bit. I may try something else in the future. Read more

I have been using this product for years. I usually purchase it from a local pharmacy. Once I find out that Amazon offers this on subscription, I decided to give it a try. My husband, who usually dyes my hair, immediately noticed a strong fume when he applied the product. I noticed it too. The fume got so bad that we decided to turn on the bathroom fan. I know this product does not give out strong fumes because I have literally used it for years. So it was certainly surprising. But to make matter worse, I have been having this strong unshakable headache literally since the day after I used the product 3 days ago, and it has not left me since. I rarely have headache. I strongly suspect the product either has expired (I can't find an expiration date on the box), or it's a counterfeit. I don't write reviews on Amazon, but since this experience is so bad that I think folks should know. I definitely will not continue purchasing this here again. Read more

This product is really great at coloring my roots, but I do have to leave it on longer than recommended in the instructions (about 10 minutes longer). It was also great at covering Blonde when I transitioned back to Brunette. To see that difference, please check out my video on YouTube, "Blonde to Brunette: Dark Blonde Goes Dimensional Brunette" on Shawna Who. Again, to cover the blonde I had to leave it on my hair for about 10 minutes longer than recommended in the instructions. This Iced Golden Brown is a beautiful color! If you have a similar skin tone to mine (warm/neutral), I would highly recommend this color. The photo I've attached is a combination of 3 different colors, as you'll see in the video... Read more

**Update**: I will not be using this again, or maybe any other hair color. After the last time I used this, I lost a LOT of hair. And I mean A LOT. I know it was not breakage because when I looked at individual hairs, the root bulb was still attached, so it FELL OUT. My hair now looks thin at the crown and in a few days, I am going to get a much shorter layered haircut to try to disguise it and help ease my transition to going dye-free. It's a shame because I really did like the color, but not at this expense. This is the best hair color for me. It's brown but not too dark, so my grays look like I got caramel highlights. I bought this in store once, but have not been able to find it since, so I'm glad Amazon had it. My hair is shiny and healthy. The only thing is I would recommend everyone to purchase a box of gloves to use instead of the ones that come with this kit, as they are very cheap and not stretchy so they may not fit. I actually asked my doctor and she gave me a few pairs at no charge. Read more

This is a review for the L'Oreal Paris Hair Color Preference Cools Dye: 5C. I was so excited when I saw that a hair color company finally made a line of cool brunettes to minimize brass. I always vacillate between really wanting red hair and wanting zero red at all in my hair. The problem with a lot of brown hair colors are that they aren't cool enough to get rid of the brassy tones from one of my last red-brown experiments, so I was stoked when I saw this new line. I chose 5C because I thought it would be darker than it is - however, unlike most dyes, this one was the exact color on the box and I should have gone darker. My hair is a little past my bra strap, so I bought two boxes and there was just barely enough, which was a little surprising, because I typically have a lot left over when I use two boxes of dye - so keep that in mind depending on your hair length. I left the dye on 5 minutes longer than recommended due to how vivid the red still was at my roots. The biggest issue for me was how drippy the gel was. It went everywhere and it made the dye more difficult to apply, since I use a bowl and brush for application. At least the dye did not stain my skin as badly as other hair dyes tend to do. I generally lose a lot of hair when I dye, but not a lot came out this time, which was great - but whenever my hair is wet now, it feels like lead. The good thing is that my hair feels light and fluffy when dry, as well as very soft and very shiny! My hair looks exactly like the color on the box, except for in certain areas where the previous red had REALLY clung. It actually makes my hair quite interesting in the light, as bits of cherry randomly pop through the silvery brown areas. In lower light, it's an incredibly rich, beautiful brown.I'm not going to lie, I still prefer L'Oreal Feria. I think it's more multidimensional, less drippy, and has much more shine. 4 stars because I like it, and I think I will go for L'Oreal Cools 4C the next time to get that silvery dark look that I was going for, BUT there was not a lot of dye even using two boxes, it was very drippy, it didn't fully cover the red-brown that I had, and WOW, did it have an overpowering chemical smell that made me see spots at times.Pros:+Exact color on the box for me, coming from 5 weeks old L'Oreal Feria 41, Crushed Garnet+Beautiful silvery highlights+Incredibly soft+Dye washed out quickly+Didn't stain my skin as much as other dyes+Lots of shine+Little hair loss after dying (usually there is a lot of hair fall-out when I dye)Cons-VERY drippy-Couldn't fully power through the former red-When washing out, and now when it is wet, my hair feels a solid lead block, which is a bizarre sensation-Strong chemical smell(First two photos: Before, L'Oreal Feria 41 Crushed Garnet, next three: After, L'Oreal Superior Preference 5C, last: Super Preference 4C after "fading" in May. Not sure why the photos are uploading sideways.)EDIT 05/07/16I wanted to check back in with my thoughts on longevity and whether or not this turned brassy. I ended up purchasing the 4C to fully cover up the Crushed Garnet and applied it about four weeks after the 5C. Some great things out of that - 4C did NOT give my hair the lead block feeling that I had from the 5C, which was a bit odd, but for which I was grateful.I am very surprised and happy to say that my hair has not turned brassy at all, and my hair is still incredibly shiny. I have not dyed it since or touched it up; the silvery highlights are still here and my hair is thick, healthy, and glossy. While the hair dye is incredibly noxious to apply in terms of strong chemical smell, the results have beyond impressed me and I still can't quite believe that there has been NO BRASS that has come through. My hair is a gorgeous, dark, silvery ash brown and I have to say kudos, L'Oreal; this one really hit the nail on the head. Read more

This colour is neither ashy nor dark. I have naturally dark ashy hair and for a while now have been using nice n easy’s ‘darkest natural brown’ but found that it still left warm undertones in my hair which was noticeable as soon as my roots grew out even a tiny amount. Was really hoping this colour would solve that but unfortunately it was MORE orangey than my previous colour and definitely a lighter brown. I’m really surprised by the other reviews here saying that it’s the perfect cool and dark colour, almost feels like I was sent something different! Anyway it didn’t work for me, will need to re dye with my previous colour. Read more

Package arrived as expected. The color is brilliant, such an empowering yet settle and calm yet modern shade of dark brown and the hair looks considerably healthier and shinier. The paint had some downsides such as being too liquid therefore hard at application along with extremely strong suffocating ammonia smell. Beside that, the results are absolutely gorgeous. Read more

I ordered 5C to go over the copper red I had. I bleach bathed my hair a few yimes and was left with an orange tone. The cool tone of this brown was perfect to go over this without being overly brassy afterward. Very happy. Read more

great and slightly runny formulation; my hair goes dark easily and this medium is actually a medium on me, aka, a bit lighter than mostUPDATE: I'd rather give it a 4/5 because the grey coverage isn't as good as the ones that cost a third the price: it acts more like a semi-permanent where the greys don't grab enough of the dye Read more

My wife used this product and the color was fine but the conditioner got stuck in her hair in clumps. She did not put in much and no matter how much water she used, it would not come out. I have a feeling it may have been expired but since these things do not have expiry dates, can't be sure. Read more
