The web page states “Some consumers find this thicker consistency to have a “soothing” effect.” Well that soothing effect is produced by the use of Carrageenan. That particular ingredient is not mentioned on the web page but it is on the product label which is why I returned my order for refund when I saw it. Check out the Cornucopia Institute's web page (menu-reports/scroll down to the guide link) for a long list/guide of food products that contain Carrageenan which is a potent inflammatory agent and possible carcinogen. It is used as a thickener mainly-it makes ice cream smoother.. Research links Carrageenan to gastrointestinal inflammation, including higher rates of colon cancer, in laboratory animals. Saved my life, I have chronic gastritis. Tried other brands that were thinner and even distilled. None of them worked for me like this one and when it expires and you still have some left you can use it on your skin for burns as long as you keep it in the refrigerator permanently you don't have to throw it away after it expires though I would not take it orally after it expires. I feel very compelled to write this review. Please read the label! I did not. This taught me a huge lesson. Just because something says organic does not mean that it is good for you. The reason that I chose to purchase this product is because I’m dealing with health issues associated with reflux. I was told that starting my day with a glass of aloe Vera juice would heal my gut.....well it would, except this contains citric acid. The preservatives in our food products are making us all sicker. I love, love, love that there are no additives in this Aloe gel! Some of the value brands out there have some seriously crazy/yucky/toxic stuff in them. Note that on the super cheap Aloe gels available that it says it's 100% GEL- not 100% aloe. Well, no duh that it is 100% gel! But if you take a look at the ingredients actually in those cheeps, it is alarming! And most of them contain a high percentage of alcohol which at least for my skin is not soothing at all! That is some sneaky marketing B.S. and that personally pisses me off.But I digress- the Lilly of the Desert Aloe gel is about as pure as it can get! I love using it in my D.I.Y. beauty products, such as face wash and lotions. After extensive research, I have found this brand to be the least expensive for the most pure Aloe I could find anywhere that didn't have freaky stuff in it. The flavor is tolerable it outweighs the slightly acidic taste. I have been using Lilly of the Desert for four months and it has helped with settling my stomach, I feel more energy and when I forget to take it I can tell the difference in my digestion.
