About this item [48 Colors] Gansai is traditional Japanese watercolor, utilizing colors that are based off those seen in nature, meaning they are vivid and opaque. Pans are carefully filled with paint that is smooth, not granulated, and dries with a slight shiny finish. [Flexible Techniques] Paints do not leave hard edges when dry, making flat-washes easy to accomplish, and are easy to layer with proper technique. [Brush Dexterity] Gansai Tambi Pans are much larger than typical watercolor pans, giving you the ability to use both small or large brushes quite easily. [Palette and Color chart included] Within each Gansai Tambi set is a protective sheet that not only keeps your pans from shifting but can be used as a palette mixer. Each box also includes a color chart so you can swatch the colors yourself and distinguish between them quickly. [Beautiful Packaging, Ideal for Gift-giving] Water-based pigment is ACMI-certified, and packaged in a simple cardboard box with elegant green washi overlay. Perfect for gifts.

Very new to water color and so far this is one of the best if not the best since it is very different from our “western” water color paints. I used the cheat canson Xl and the Princeton Summit brush with these watercolor and boy are they amazing! I would definitely buy it again for sure! Read more

These are simply wonderful. Re-wet very easily, rich pigment, smooth and creamy feel. You can go from opaque to varying degrees of transparency - they are so versatile.Don't be turned away by what I have seen others call 'a thin layer of paint in the pans' - the pans are larger than even a standard full pan watercolor, but much shorter. The result is that there is still about the same amount of paint. Additionally, the colors are so concentrated that this paint will last a long time and allow you to create hundreds of paintings. The packaging is elegant and practical - they are presented so beautifully that all you'd need is a ribbon wrapped around the box when giving as a gift.I recommend these paints highly and have nothing but good things to say. A true pleasure to paint with.I've uploaded a video on YT - search for "Review: Kuretake GANSAI TAMBI watercolor 48 Colors". Read more

With 48 colors, I have lots to choose from, and I love their vibrancy and smoothness. That said, these paints are very different from Western-made paints. They pretty much stay on the surface unless used with copious amounts of water. Even then, any of the desired watercolor "bloom" is quite limited. They almost act like a gouache. I just got them, so I don't know, overall, how I'll wind up using them, since I prefer the action of the more familiar translucent paints. If you like opaque, you should love these...they go on like satin! Read more

I love these watercolors. These are my 2nd set. I originally had the 36 set.Its nice to have new colors and professional colors like cadmiums, cobalt, and quinacridone. They’ve really stepped up their game.I love the big pans and find the paints have plenty of pigment. In my travels I’ve come across many professional artists that own these as well.I look forward to using all these new colors Read more

Firstly, it's a lovely gansai set - it's a type of watercolor where pigment is mixed with animal glue products. It behaves differently that standard watercolor where pigment is mixed with gum arabic. That means gansai is more likely to sit on top of of the paper vs being absorbed which makes lifting easier and easily reactivates when rewet. The colors are more opaque and have a glossier finish. Also, unlike watercolors - you're not supposed to mix more than 2 - actually, you really shouldn't mix them at all - I should've sucked it up and bought the full 48 color set that includes more purples, beiges, a grey and metallics.4/5 stars due to the fact that 1/4 of this palette is a green hue - they really love that color. Another purple or a magneta/pink would be better. Read more

I saw a painting someone had made on a watercolor site and I asked what paints she had used. I had never heard of this brand but decided to take the plunge. The colors are strong yet water down very well. I just painted a rainbow giraffe for a friend and couldn't believe how colorful it was! Each pan is about 1 inch wide and 2 inches long so you get a great amount of paint. According to a google search, they are also lightfast. Read more

These watercolors are great! I'm fairly new to using watercolor, but have purchased other watercolor sets and noticed the difference right away. The colors are vibrant, clear and well pigmented plus they activate easily. This is a beautiful set wit 48 full pans. The few metalic colors are beautiful . A couple of colors are a bit opaque...one light gray, white and a lavender. The only down side is that the pans are loose fitting in a flat box and they don't have the color name on the top side of the pans. The color info is on the bottom of each pan and on the box where each one sits. It does come with a chart showing the colors and names that you can refer to. It also comes with a chart with the names and blank squares that you can paint the colors onto.I made the mistake of turning the box over and all of the pans fell out. None were damaged, but it took a bit of time to replace each one into their proper spot, but it wasn't difficult. The box is simple, but very pretty. This would make a very nice gift. This is a quality set and I would definitely order this set again! Read more

O M G !!! I love this watercolour set and it’s been inspiring me even to do more Polaroid style little paintings, I have attached an example (if you are interested to see more paintings then please feel free to check out my Instagram art page @FineFarhana 😊) Honestly, I love the shiny sheen it leaves behind when you increase the opacity of it. They mix well with water and colours are highly pigmented. So far it’s been my best watercolour set and I also love the fact that they have included 3 metallic colours too. Please check out my colour swatches to get better ideas about the colours😊 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 Read more

EDIT I found the perfect palette to house these - Manci 24 wells watercolour palette. The wells come out and has an extra shelf so all of the paints fit in.These are beautiful paints. They have a high pigment content and look bright and eye popping when painted. I've used alongside other paints (mostly winsor Newton) and they seems to mix and blend well with them. The pans are much bigger than the usual size making it harder to add to palettes. Read more

On the evening of the day these paints were due to be delivered I received an email from Amazon to say they had been delivered successfully and that the package was accepted by a male resident of the household. None of this was true. No package was delivered to our home. No male resident accepted receipt of the package. We searched for the package in case it had been left in a safe place. It had not. There are many to choose from in our front garden, used successfully by other delivery personal. The following morning, our postman, Tom, discovered the package in my neighbour's porch. Knowing they were away in France, he checked for correct name and address. Realising it was addressed to me and not the residents of our neighbour's house, he passed the package to me. I would like to know who the mysterious male resident is that the Amazon delivery person passed my parcel to. This delivery person must have an amazingly long arm to reach all the way to France. So much for truthful and accurate tracking!I have searched a long time to find these Kuretaki paints in a set of 48, at a price I could just afford. Seeing them on Amazon at £50 and a few pence, with free delivery on prime, I jumped at a chance to buy them and deleted the equivalent set priced at £65 and then some for postage on my eBay site. Amazon represented great value. The box is a cool shade of olive green with a chop or cartouche of gold Japanese writing down the centre. Inside the paints are fixed in place by a neat see through plastic cover, below which is a glorious site of the most amazing range of watercolour/ gouache paints in kingsized pans. The box has the names of the colours charted out on the inside of the lid, on the base of the box and on a smaller free sheet of paper, both in Japanese characters and in English. Each pan has the Japanese colour symbols on it's base. This could be a great way to learn a little Japanese. This is a beautifully presented set of paints. I have already bought a few examples as single pans and have been impressed by the ease of wetting and release of paint from the pan. The large size allows the use of larger brushes when doing larger washes. Colour intensity is high, as is luminosity and coverage. They can be used as watercolour or gouache depending on the amount of water used with them. They are a joy to use. Really looking forward to preparing the colour swatches that have been included in the box for your convenience. I can't wait to get started. Read more

I am used to Schmincke Horadam watercolours and was looking for a cheaper alternative. I bought these due to the very positive feedback and the good value for money. These colours require a different technique though, they are more opaque, less translucent, harder to blend and don't dissolve well when dry on paper. I am not getting the 'watercolour-feel'. Unfortunately this product is not for me. The lesson for me is, better invest in what you know and even 5stars might not tell everything. Read more
