I would like to clarify dosage information based on my research.TL;DR - roughly 1 teaspoon ~= 1800mg potassium ~= ~40% US RDA. I take about 1/3rd teaspoon twice a day.ALL potassium suppliments have a government limit of 99mg of actual potassium. Since this stuff has about 38%, a serving size will be the 275mg listed which is not particularly helpful.Furthermore, 99mg of potassium is ONLY 3% of the USRDA! So its basically useless. Therefore, if you actually need a potassium supplement, then you will want to take a lot more than 3%. Note: It is actually 100/4700 x100% which is 2.1%.So the first question is: how much to take?Ideally you get all you need from foods, but if you are reading this, then that is not the case.US RDA is 4700 mg.Potassium is used in lethal injections... a big spike of it all at once can stop ones heart. The dosage used is 7500mg of pure potassium. If taken a little at a time, it is quite safe. A 150lb person would need 360,000mg of potassium citrate to have a 50% chance of dying. Which is about 120,000mg of actual potassium.A higher dose pill would cause a small pocket of very concentrated potassium in your stomach which could cause cell-death and thus stomach problems in that little area. When you take a powder mixed with liquid that is not a problem. For me personally, I figure that about 20% to 40% supplement is a good number. It is enough to be significant, but if I was getting enough anyways, it would not push me over the edge very far.A tablespoon of potassium citrate is about 5000 mg of product. Which means about 1900 mg of actual potassium. Or 40% US RDA.This is based on several assumptions. First, you cannot measure someones weight with a ruler right? Well, you cannot measure MASS by calculating volume. But you can take 1 teaspoon and then weigh it and come up with a general rule of thumb. Note that there is only about 1/2 as much as math would normally dictate because the powder is grainy and there is lots of room for air pockets.Due to the danger of taking a lot at once, I'd definitely try to take it several times a day in smaller doses. 1/4th teaspoon 3x a day would hit around 30% US RDA.Obviously I am not going to tell you how much to take, but I hope this info helps you make more sense of measuring it, and that it is important NOT to be too casual with it and overdose! When looking through various reviews I was confused on the best way to measure to get the true amount of potassium I desired. So I bought a milligram scale and here are my results:1/16 tsp=328mg=118mg potassium1/8 tsp=657mg=236mg potassium1/4 tsp=1314mg=473mg potassium1/2 tsp=2628mg=946mg potassium1 tsp=5256mg=1892mg potassium It is difficult to accurately measure milligrams of powder. I used a 1/8 tsp as standard, carefully measured, leveled, weighed and averaged 10 seperate measures. I got variations of 20-40 mg. The milligram scale I used has an accuracy of within 5 mg. Using a full teaspoon, I speculate you might get 320-640 mg variations, 1 or 2 standard doses, not very significant when converted to actual potassium content. You can use my results, as I will be, to insure you are getting the correct amount of potassium you desire. I hope this helps. This product is an extreme value for the price paid compared to individual capsules. The powder has a very bitter/salty-like taste. I just swallow quickly with food to get it over with. I haven't tried mixing with any drinks. Read more
I have been taking potassium citrate in powder for many years and I mix the potassium with a gallon of distilled water and pink hymalian salt in a glass water jug to mineralize the water. Since receiving this new bag I have had terrible body pain in areas. First, I thought I herniated a disk in my back (that came on 2 days after starting new bag) my back hurt so bad and I could barely move. I had to crawl to get anywhere. My back started to feel a bit better, though not 100% then my foot hurt suddenly without warning or injury and it felt as like I broke my foot. Terrible pain! Then the little aches and pains in other areas of my body. Which I never have. After thinking back and going through all I ate, did and other things, I realized all the pain and aches I was having started after I started this new bag of potassium. I then stopped taking the potassium and within 24 hours my pain was gone... Like nothing ever happened. I knew I had to really make sure my pain was coming from the potassium so I again drank the water with potassium and again, without warning pain came back again in my back, hip, hands, shoulders, I hurt and ached everywhere! I stopped the potassium water and again a day later I was pain and ache free. Can any of the wonderful amazon people help me with this and let me know if this is right. Again, I have been taking potassium for several years and nothing else has changed with what I take besides this new bag of potassium.Thank you!!! I'm leaving three stars because I am confused on this Read more
