As others have stated, this comes out a lot darker than the picture on the box shows. It's more of a medium brown and (in my hair, anyway) pulled a lot of reddish/brassy tones. I've uploaded a photo of how the 7N Blonde shade turned out on my hair, although the photo did not really pick up on the reddish undertones much. On the plus side, it didn't seem to hurt the length of my hair that had previously been henna'd. I also love that it is more natural than traditional box dyes, and gentler on your head (and nose!). It's also not tested on animals, which is a big plus for many. The color has a decent amount of shine and looks very natural and covered hair well. It almost looks like you have highlights on certain strands. If you are coloring the roots only, it's best to leave it on the full 40 mins, but for re-touches only go 10 mins. It does wash out and fade a lot, so if you don't like the color, give it a few weeks. Within a month, it's a shade or so lighter. Compared to Naturtint however, I find the Herbatint colors tend to be a little darker and pull more red undertones, so I will return to Naturtint. Read more

My natural hair is curly med-dark brown with a lot of premature gray. It actually looked kind of nice in and of itself, but it did make me look a lot older, so I started coloring it a couple of years ago with Naturtint after an unimpressive test with premixed henna (I'll try that again when I'm ready to taper off of coloring altogether). Naturtint was ok, but the color seemed to fade rather dramatically after a couple of weeks, and leaving it on long enough to cover the gray would often make me feel dizzy and nauseous. So I decided to try Herbatint. As others have said, these colors run dark; the first shade I chose (6N) was much darker than expected, and unfortunately the areas of my hair that were previously colored with Naturtint really sucked in the dark dye, with a couple of small darker patches still evident months later. However, I switched right away to 7N and as time goes on I'm really liking the color. I might try 8N this summer. The N range is recommended for covering gray hair, and I try to choose one step lighter than my natural color, somewhere between my old brown and the new grays. This seems to be a good rule of thumb for me. I am able to leave this on for about 40 minutes, enough to hit the grays, without it irritating my skin or making me feel woozy. The gray hairs are still slightly twinkly through the color compared to the non-grays, which worried me at first, but the color still hangs in there well, and it seems more natural than a monochromatic mass of clearly dyed hair.Unlike Naturtint, Herbatint does not come with a mixing bottle and recommends mixing in a non-reactive dish and applying with a brush. Since the goal for graying hair is to hit the roots as much as possible, I found this difficult and tedious with my curly mop and just bought my own mixing squirt bottle, which works much better for me. The color and developer bottles each contain 60ml of liquid. My hair is about shoulder-length and thirsty, for reference. I usually measure out 15ml of each into a small container for a touch up application (entire hairline, all around natural part) for which I do use a small plastic container and brush, and the remaining product is enough to mix in the squirt bottle for a "full" application. I do one or the other about every 18-21 days. The thing I like least about this line is the companion shampoo and conditioner, which they encourage you to use after treatment to help the color set. These leave my hair looking and feeling like straw. The last time I colored, I did use their shampoo packet but broke down and used a coconut deep conditioning pack instead of the Herbatint "Royal Creme". The color seemed to last just as long as far as I can tell, and it sure felt and looked a lot better. If it didn't make my already fragile hair so dry, I would use the companion conditioner, since it's designed to work together.I am cheap and impatient with beauty regimens, and Herbatint fits both my budget and my annoyance threshold. This is a good choice for those of us who prefer products that are a bit kinder to nature and the little animals, and it's gentle to skin and easy to use. Read more

I love this stuff! I love that it doesn't have all those harsh chemicals. I am allergic to fragrances and some chemicals. I was about to think I was going to have to let my hair go gray! I was not pleased with that idea. This hair color allowed me to continue to color my gray. It does a good job of covering those up. I have dark brown hair. I read the other reviews first before ordering. I decided to go with the 7N Blonde. I was so skeptical. I just knew it wasn't going to come out a decent color. I've been through that before! I have turned my hair a bright orange, dark red, and who knows how many other colors when trying to find one to do the job. The 7N Blonde was perfect!! Odd as that may sound for a brunette, it was exactly the right shade. Just be sure to leave it in for the recommended time. The first time I used it I was in a hurry and couldn't wait quite long enough. It still did a good job but not as much coverage as I would have liked. 30 minutes is perfect for my hair. That make take some experimenting on your part. It may vary. The only thing I do not like about this hair color is the lack of an applicator. I am buying a paint applicator bottle before I use it again. I have used a brush to apply it but wasn't really crazy about that. So, I'm going to try the paint applicator bottle. I think I could actually half of the product and save half for later. I only need to apply it to my roots as they grow out. So a win there! Try this. I think you'll love it, too. Read more

Read more
