ok, We own an old "happy baby" brand food mill. It's basically the same design. The happy baby mill is not sold anymore. So, we bought one of these green sprouts mills as a back up just in case our old one breaks. Here's the deal. Whoever designed this new green version basically took everything good about the happy baby mill and made it worse.1. It's big and clunky compared to the Happy Baby Grinder.2. The holes in the metal "grill" are few and far between compared to the happy baby grinder.(because of this you are basically pushing the food into a wall with a few holes in it rather than through a grid of holes. this makes pushing it really hard unless you're trying to grind something thats already super soft like apple sauce)3. The blade that rotates on the underside of the grill is not flush with the metal grill so it doesn't effectively "cut" the food but just stirs it round and round as you try to press the food through the holes. This helps to contribute to the difficulty in pressing the food through. (the happy baby grinder works more like a scissors cutting the food between the blade and the grill)4. and lastly this one leaks through the bottom while you are pressing down even though it feels tighter than the HB mill.So sadly even though this looks a lot like the one that works, they've actually engineered it to not work near as well. Green Sprouts Baby Food Mill CAN NOT function as a food mill because the cutting blade is not in contact with the mill plate (there is a plastic washer spacer between the the cutting blade and mill plate - WHY?) I modified the design of the Green Sprouts mill and it now functions at Five Stars vs One Star as shipped. Modifications: 1) remove and discard the plastic spacing washer from between the cutting blade and mill plate, 2) surface grind the underside of the mill plate to a true flat dimension (not the surface imprinted with UP) and surface grind the cutting blade underside to true flat dimension. Reassemble and now this baby food mill has full capability of processing any food including meat and stringy vegetables - just like the ones in the 1970s. Read more
The concept is great. You can grind up small amounts of food to feed to your baby or for other purposes. However it LEAKS. The first thing I used it for was to grind up organic peaches. All the beautiful juice from the peach leaked out (from the bottom of the unit) onto the counter. Surely it’s not too much to ask to have a snug connection between the two green cylinder pieces that prevents liquids created from leaking out. It *should* allow liquids created to be pushed up and out into the upper portion so they can be served and not wasted. Read more
We bought 2 of these, one for us and one for Grandma. As others have posted/documented, the spacing between the blade and screen is wide. Having said that, it does work great for soft food, and Grandma said she tried it with cooked chicken and it "works" but "you need to be strong". Also, do not try to do a very small amount (1 feeding worth), as the plunger isn't designed to go all the way up. It will hit the blade bolt and stop about 1/4" from a full stroke, leaving an amount of food unprocessed. I gave 3 stars for blade/screen spacing as the inefficiency and waste caused by this offends my sense of productivity. Read more
I had something similar to this when my 28 year old son was a baby and loved it. I ordered this because my grandson refuses to eat baby food, even the food my daughter and I spent an entire day making! He wants what's on YOUR plate! This mill is great! He ate up the mac and cheese and corn and it left behind all the stuff he may have choked on. Very easy to use and easy to clean up. Love that we will be able to take it with us if and when we go out because it doesn't need batteries or power to operate. Throw in the food, push down and turn the handle. It grindsup the food very well into edible bites for him. Buying one for my daughter and our lake place now so this one can stay at MeeMaw's house. Read more
This is a great baby food grinder! I absolutely love it. I use it to feed my son what my fiance and myself are eating for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I'll throw veggies, meat, rice, beans, etc in there and just grind it up. I think something that makes people unhappy about this grinder is that they expect a pureed texture from it- if you want that, get a blender. There is a little texture to the food when it comes through the screen, and yes, it does take some muscle to grind denser food like meat. The texture in the food works very well for my 8 month old, but if you're feeding a 4 month old, you may want to consider fully pureeing the food to prevent gagging.Another thing that I LOVE about this grinder is that it's so easy to use and it's portable. I just throw it in the diaper bag when we go out to eat, and I can share my food with my son. Honestly, it has made eating out with a baby so much better! Now that he has something to eat, he actually enjoys going to restaurants, which means my fiance and myself can also enjoy our time out.In conclusion, this grinder is an awesome, old-school tool similar to the one my mom used for my siblings and myself. It's great because buying this and feeding your baby what you're eating is way healthier and cheaper than constantly buying baby food. It's also nice because it doesn't require electricity, so you can use it anywhere, anytime. If you're into simpler baby gadgets that have worked for decades, I recommend this product. If you want something that magically produces Gerber-like slop for your baby with no effort on your part, keep dreaming. Also, it's never leaked on me. Read more
This baby food mill is well made and has metal parts (strainer and slicer) while the rest is plastic. It is very practical for quick milling. This is much better than the disappointing "Baby Dan" brand that is super cheap quality in comparison to this one.The only comment I'd make is that this had lots of rigid plastic surfaces in the mill. I easily scraped them off with my fingernail and i don't believe it will be an issue, but had i not done that, my baby would have eaten the plastic.Another thing is that the holes in the strainer are larger than other mills, but my baby actually likes food that isn't pureed. This baby food will have texture but not chunks to choke on. Read more
This is a good little gadget to have with you at home and even if you go in a restaurant with a baby, ideal for mushing up all those nice vegetables and fruit, also ideal for soft meat and fish portions for your little one. I highly recommend it. Saves on buying jar foods and gives your baby the exact food you eat without additives and preservatives. Read more
Might be useful for some babies, but I found mine grew out of puréed/mashed food very quickly. I found this very fiddly to use, with some explosions caused by winding the handle the wrong way. It's in storage for the next baby! Read more
Easy to take apart and clean. Purées food well but still some small lumps in certain foods eg carrot when pushed through the machine. Nice and compact for storage and travel. Read more
Ottimo prodotto. Lo consiglio Read more
