Polyhexanide is according to some studies the least damaging preservative, so this thing is probably the best among preserved eye drops, having hyaluronate (part of the eye gel and brain and meibomian glands of our eyelids) and glycerin instead of the more toxic chemical lubricants that are man-made and less biocompatible. Glycerin is everywhere in our body. Also, the lipids it contains are identical to some of the eye lipids, unlike other brands that have rather odd lipids (castor oil, flaxseed oil, petroleum-derived mineral oil, and white petrolatum, etc). The reason these may be comfier is due to the lipids, glycerin, hyaluronate, soothing vitamin E acetate and also higher pH than more acidic brands made by Clear Eyes or other companies. Here is the thing, a lot of eye drops have dubious inactive ingredients and lubricants which may do actually more damage than polyhexanide itself, so it's not as simple and "black and white" as "preserved drops are always worse than unpreserved". It all depends on the overall toxicity of all ingredients for a given genome and eye structure, pH, osmolality, etc. Take a pH paper, measure your tear pH, and see which brand works better for you. The funny thing is this thing can help relieve redness too, even if it has no redness reliever. (side effects from redness relievers include rebound redness, inflammation due to eyes not getting nutrients since blood vessels are constricted). If you ever want to use preserved eye drops, I think this brand is worth giving it a try. It's their latest product, with the latest findings, in Europe 90+ brands with hyaluronate exist, in US, not many. One word of caution: it does contain boric acid, which is thought as potentially toxic for reproduction and lungs and etc if you use these tears a lot. It's best with preserved and borate tears to use them seldom, maybe 4 times a week, not 5-10 times a day. :) Borate also damages corneal and conjunctiva cells in some studies, as do other buffers, like citrate, etc, so do your PubMed search and decide how often to use these.Another thing to keep in mind is that all thicker drops, be them refresh optive or this one (less thick than many others with hyaluronate out there) can cause thick mucus at night to form and even red eyes due to foreign body sensation inflammatory response that occurs. Hence, one night, 11-16-2021, I noticed my eyes were so red after using these drops, but that could have been due to other things going on. regardless, do test all drops before using them, since you may be sensitive to the preservative that stains the cornea if overused, and to hyaluronate. It's worth mentioning that the MW of hyaluronate in our eyes is very high 4 million and up, whereas these drops usually have 0.2 to 2 million. The company refused to share the molecular weight of their hyaluronate. There are 2 types of hyaluronate: low molecular weight which is inflammatory and redness-causing (angiogenic, promotes the creation of new tiny blood vessels on your conjunctiva, and on your white of your eye) and high molecular weight (above 1 million daltons), which is anti-inflammatory and antiangiogenic.Regardless, you can use these to wet a q-tip to remove stuck eyelids (the drops help eyelash to move to the corner of the eye where the q tip can easily drag it out without touching the eye) when sterile saline 0.9% does not work well, due to being too liquid and when a thicker drop brand works better (this is 5$ and expires in 2 years, while other thick drops are way more expensive).Always test every drop to see (using a 20x mirror, not 1x, 1x doesn't show almost anything usually, unless it's a catastrophic drop brand that makes huge redness right away) if they cause redness after 5 minutes, 10, 30, 200 minutes of eyes closed, before using them at night, to make sure your eyes are OK with the pH 7.0 of these drops and with the ingredients and you don't get irritation, discomfort of any sort. :) That way you know they don't cause redness or irritation of the caruncle (eye corner) and that they are OK to use once a day. Generally, you want to use drops that reduce inflammation, so if hyaluronate is the inflammatory type in these, this is not good, as it increases the number of red vessels and the dumping of inflammatory cytokines into your ocular area, so use with caution and rarely if any issue. Also, sterile saline like LacriPUre or others work very well and better than this many times, without any issues of safety as they contain just sodium chloride at the concentration in natural tears. I hope this helps and please be aware we are centuries away from good drops with the 2100 plus chemicals in natural tears, these are just like 15th-century alchemy stuff compared to future knowledge in 500 years. :) Read more
I love this product although it's terrible horrible deteriorating to your eyes yet I still use it on occasion. I recommend if you use it to use a natural tears afterwards to replace moisture that vising products deplete. I'm not saying do not use it I'm just telling you what I know. Coupling it with a natural tear product reduces the caustic effects that are produced by visine products but like I say I use them and like them. Read more
I had a problem with itchy eyes and I didn't realize that it was caused by dry eyes. I've never experienced dry eyes before now, but this product really helped because it lubricates the eye area. It doesn't cause any uncomfortable symptoms and is very mild. Read more
for the past few years i've had to cope with frequent severe bouts of corneal abrasions. i have prescription ointment to use on the worst days when i can't even open an eye due to the pain. that said anyone who has used thick gels for eye reliefs knows full well how you can get relief with those but at the cost of being able to see clearly. a necessary trade off.that said more often than not i have moderate issues that don't require gel rather something between an eye drop and gel. i have tried just about every type of drops out there are and none really did more than give me a minute or two of relief.then i happened to accidentally pick up a bottle of this at our local pharmacy. it worked great! it gave me long lasting relief that almost entirely made me forget about my eye abrasions. better still i could see clearly unlike the case with the gel type.there is not a single brand or type of drops that i've used to date that even comes close to the relief i get with this specific formulation. i have not been able to find it since at our local pharmacy but thankfully amazon carried it!i could not recommend this more for anyone who suffers from corneal abrasions. this is the best other than prescription eye gels. This bottle works extremely quick. I use two drops in each eye right when my allergies start and it stops the itching and stops the dryness. Read more
I like the fact that this brand of eye drop don’t expire after 1-2 years after production date. Many other brands are recommended to use within 1 month after its first opened and I only use eye drops when my eyes are dry so the other brands were usually wasted after using just a few drops. I bought 4 different otc eyedrops for dry eyes, and these were the most immediately soothing. They're thick but not ooey. No issues with blurriness after applying. Haven't tested to see if any of the other types I tried lasted longer. Pretty cost effective. Read more
