(Corrected Nov. 2019 in response to Dazza, who pointed out - correctly - that the ingredients in this mask are split between two sections of the label. )Let me stipulate up front that we use a lot of Cetaphil products in our house (as well as Cerave, which is quite similar). Second, this is an excellent mask. It will leave most people's skin tightened and freshened. A very light, absorbent moisturizer immediately following will help keep it that way.Bentonite clays (there are a few different types) are often used in premium clay masks. They are super absorbent and form a jelly-like texture when hydrated. A lot of the purported health benefits of clay masks are attributed to Bentonite because of its ability to attract and absorb certain charged ions from the skin ("toxins"). Bentonite typically makes up a small portion of the clay mixture in a mask because its texture when hydrated doesn't lend itself to staying on your face. Other clays like Kaolin provide the clingy texture needed. The combination of bentonite and finely ground additional clays yields a luxurious texture quite unlike coarser mud clays. All good, but what about the Cetaphil mask?Unfortunately, Bentonite is a somewhat imprecise term. Some regard any sedimentary clay with 70% or more smectites as Bentonite. Others regard only montmorillonite clays derived from volcanic ash as true Bentonite. So there may be some marketing art going on here with the mask. It would be better if the mineral were specified. In addition to Kaolin and Bentonite, the label lists Aluminum Magnesium Silicate. Also known as Veegum, Aluminum Magnesium Silicate, like Bentonite, is a smectite clay with similar hydration properties - but without "true" Bentonite's other properties. Veegum is used in the cosmetics industry primarily as a thickener. My mask of choice? Finely-ground Bentonite and Kaolin dry clays (I have roughly 5 pounds of each in my master bath), mixed with water and a bit of lemon juice. The Cetaphil mask texture and effects are about the same (which is good). The Cetaphil substitutes different acids for brightening. And it keeps ... mine has to be mixed as needed, as it doesn't keep well. Now, is the Cetaphil as good as my own Bentonite mask? Well, that depends on what you value. Cost? Mine wins overwhelmingly. Consistency, batch-to-batch? Cetaphil, hands-down. Convenience? Cetaphil. Purity? Hmmm, there may be a longer discussion there. I do like the simplicity of mine, though, and there are no additives of any type. And the health benefits of "true" Bentonite may be referenced in scientific terms but in reality are more marketing (or even religious).Bottom line: The Cetaphil Pro Dermacontrol mask is very, very good, with results comparable to a hand-mixed mask made with premium clays and other fresh ingredients. It's an excellent choice in commercial clay masks. Read more

***UPDATED REVIEW***July 21,2020: I've just receiced it today and I am writing this review after my first time trying it. The scent of the clay is not pleasant which I guess is good cuz' it is clay, isnt it, and that means there is no unnecassry perfume added. It feels a little tight on the skin when it dries, but the skin feels smooth after I rinsed it off with warm water (as intrucstion). I also realized one of the blackhead clog on my nose came out by itselt and the rest was just easy to "scratch" out (like I didnt need to squeeze it). I will be updating my review when I use it longer. I am planing to use it once a day. It says you can use it up to 3 times per day, though. For now, I gave it an overall 4 stars.August 1, 2020: This clay mask totally deserves 5 stars. I have been using it everyday from the day I received it and my face skin has been changing noticably. I had never used clay mask before, there are definitely better ones out there but for the price given and how convinience this is, I will definitely stick with it from now on. The box says this clay mask can be used up to 3 times per day and leave it on for 5-10 mins but I use it only once a day and leave it on longer than 10 mins (due to kids lol). I use it every morning after I brushed teeth and wash my face with face wash (of course make sure dry your face with clean towel before u apply the clay mask), then I go to clean up for my 6 months old baby. Once I leave him in his baby jumper, I will go rinse my face with warm water, dry it again then finish with my normal skincare routine. AND on the day I don't have to work, then after I rinse off the clay mask from my face, I will put facemask on (the sheet kind) then go feed my 5 years old daughter and my 6 months old son breakfast, after remove the facemask I will apply my normal skincare routine, starting with facetoner (I do not rinse face after using facemask sheet, the toner is enough to wipe off any residue). I feel like my skin recently is brighter with less tiny pumps(?? Not pimples, though) and the skin on my nose feel clean. I used to use facescrub everyday on the nose area only but now I only use maybe once every 1-2 week. Well, a little about myself, I am 100% Asian with kinda brighter color skin than most Asian, so I tend to have redness under skin and quite a lot freckles. I am 28 yrs old with 2 kids. I have combination skin (yeah tell me about it) Anyway, after I finish this first jar of clay mask, I will order another one and might try to use it 2 times per day every 2 days (so 2-3 days a week will be using it 2 times). I will update my review if that would be better on my skin or too harsh on it. Ah, I also use my finger to apply the clay mask, I dont use the little spoon/spatula it comes with. It takes too much time using that little thing and can't spread well. I apply the clay mask right after I wash my face with facesoap so my hand is clean, too, so it is not necessary to use that spoon. I attached my photo of today Aug 1 (half face for privacy, sorry) Read more

I am forced to shave my head to cope with an autoimmune reaction, caused by multiple mixtures of industrial-strength chemical cocktails, ostensibly for "soldier's protection," in the gulf wars. After multiple rounds of active duty and later VA treatments I also developed a condition analogous to adult acne. Though shaving always irritated and dried my skin, the suffering of shaving, medicating, moisturizing and dealing with super-oily skin outweighed the suffering of bleeding into my pillow for many years. My current dermatologist - bless her heart - finally took the time to research a comprehensive treatment regime for my particular expression of gulf war syndrome, which included Cetaphil's Oil-Absorbing moisturizer. I was skeptical at first, because her focus on getting my scalp to produce less oil appeared to be a repeat of a prior Acutane treatment, but without the high-powered, liver-killing pills. After three months, my complexion has changed significantly for the better. Though my medications undoubtedly play a large part, I have observed significantly less oil accumulating on my scalp when I use this product, versus regular moisturizer, or using no moisturizer at all (I ran out over Christmas). In turn, my papules and pustules are disappearing, though that process might accelerate if I didn't experiment with trying to grow a little bit of hair, which my body currently still attacks after three days. Overall, I am pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of this product in my - admittedly severe - experience. Read more

I used to use Simple’s ‘light moisturiser’ which was really good for my skin as a lot of other moisturisers are too oily/thick for me. I have oily acne-prone skin so finding a good moisturiser is really difficult. I switched to this because I wanted to use one with SPF and it’s been sooo good, after a couple of days my skin was noticeably clearer and less oily! It feels a bit oily when you first put it on but dries really quickly. Read more

Okay.. So I've been trying to find a good moisturiser with Spf that won't turn me purple/ashy and I'm glad I decided to buy this. I have dark acne prone skin that turns oily as soon as you put anything on it. This is the best SPF I've come across so far. And it doesn't leave my skin feeling greasy although there is a bit of a sheen on the skin, I wouldn't class it as oily. I haven't had any major breakouts since using it however the one thing I don't like is that at the end of the day it really makes my eyes stink like crazy! So I make sure I wash it off as soon as I come home from work...Although it's expensive and sometimes painful I'd still buy it again as long as I don't end up looking like Casper the ghost! Easily the best sunscreen I've used, having tried a whole range from Altruist, La Roche Posay, Neutrogena, Paula's Choice and more. You barely know it's there even when you glob on loads of it. BUT, it stings my eyes like a swarm of one hundred thousand billion million bees. Read more

This is the worst suncream ive ever used. Im fair/freckled and thought paying more would offer me better protection. Even after several applications throughout the day, I have still burnt. That's not the worst part. If you get this stuff in your eyes, you will be in pain and blind for the rest of the day, no word of a lie. If you're lucky enough not to get it in your eyes but get it in your mouth, you'll have a vile poison taste and an off feeling in your tummy all day. I would have been better off covering myself in mud. Read more

It might just be my particular skin type and condition but I used this after a shower and as soon as I applied it, it caused irritation and redness and actually began to hurt. I would recommend folks with sensitive skin to possibly search for a much weaker product. The brand itself is very good though and I always use Cetaphil so it was strange It gave me this reaction when their other products work perfectly for me. Read more
