Until recently the only criteria I used when buying vitamins was potency. I made it a point to buy the highest potency I could get my hands on. To me, if 400 Mg of something is good, 1600 was 4x better.My obsession with potency was pretty extreme. Not only did I buy the highest potency I could find, but I took dozens of supplements each day, often overlapping the ingredients with other supplements.This changed when I saw my doctor and handed him a long list of supplements I was taking and I asked him to circle the ones I should keep taking, and cross out the ones I should stop. To my surprise, he circled only one, a multi-vitamin, and Tumeric and he made it a point of saying I shouldn't take high dosages of either.The point he made was that unless your bloodwork shows that your are deficient in some key nutrients you are not only wasting money on supplements, but potentially harming your body, especially your stomach, kidneys and liver.Considering I was there for stomach problems, I took his advice. Since you can't store it, you need 100 mg / day.same with Vitamin A -- who wants macular degernation !Magnesium -- there's not enough in this, so I also take a low-does magnesium pill. Magnesium is really important for proper body functioning. No one gets enough - you need like 2-3 cups of vegetables a day. Hence: the pills.Vit. D -- same business -- you need more than Centrum Silver Men provides. So I take a low-dows Vit D pill as well.I figure--- this Centrum is close enough to what I want..and I'm worried if i look and look and find something with enough D and Magnesium....will I get MORE of the other stuff than I want? Probably...so I supplement with a little extra Vt D and Magnesium and I'm good to go.The pill is easy enough to swallow, and seems to have little flavor. Over the years, all the doctor's I went to when asked what they think of vitamins they always say Centrum is the one to take. It is a company that has a long history of quality control and research.
