The instructions that came in the box did not include steps to calibrate the device.I figured out how to setup and calibrate the device which I’ll summarize below.Overall the thermometer is both accurate and produced consistent Body temperature readings by scanning 3-5cm from the forehead.I tested consistency by scanning my temperature 10 times over an hour and yielded the same temperature each time.Model No.: JXB-178Steps:Open the box indoors.Do not touch the infrared reader which is the barrel of the scanner.Read the instructions to familiarize yourself with the buttons.Install 2 AA batteries at the base of the handle with one oriented + and the other - according to the signs on the inside of the lid.Pull the trigger to turn on the thermometer.Let the thermometer stand out of the box for 15 minutes so that the device temperature reaches equilibrium with the ambient room temperature.After 15 minutes, pull the trigger to turn on the device.Select Body mode by pressing the MODE button.Press and hold the MODE button for 2 seconds. You should hear 1 beep and see a flashing F-1.Press the MODE button to toggle between Celsius and Fahrenheit units.Press the MEM button to select the high temperature alarm threshold. You should hear 1 beep and see a flashing F-2 on the display.Press the MEM button again to select the temperature offset. You should see a flashing F-4 and then the current offset will be displayed.Press and hold the MODE button to change the temperature offset until you reach your desired offset. The offset will run through a range of values from -5.0 to +5.0 by 0.1 increments. The thermometer is finally calibrated and set for Fahrenheit. The directions that came in the box were for model JXB-182. This is JSB-178 and they aren't the same and don't work the same. I could not figure this out on my own. I finally found the correct instructions online and it was then easy to calibrate and use. Read more

***UPDATED***It has been discovered that this DOES NOT provided ACCURATE temperatures. It registers your temperature 2 degrees less than what is actually is. I was trusting this to monitor my temp as I was exposed to Covid. I thought I was doing fine w/ low body temps. UNTIL COVID finally hit me. I compared this inaccurate instrument with a REAL under the tongue and I was running a fever and this is when I discovered it's 2 degrees under. NO GOOD.It is going back.I have read the tiny instructions over and over and I can not get the thermometer to display in Fairenheit, nor can I get my historical reads saved. I found a conversion chart I keep my my unit. (No, it does not come with one) But because I have been exposed to Covid, the urgency to have a thermometer outweighs that minor annoyance. I read a lot of product reviews on this before I purchased and was a little uneasy, but still ordered two because they were at a great price. Man, I don't know what the other reviewers did, but everything they said negative did not apply to me.1.) It does not feel like a toy, it feels like every other laser thermometer out there. I have others, they all feel the same.2.) It did come with batteries, it was very easy to tell how the battery compartment opens, and easy to know which way the batteries go in.3.) It powered up right away and was already set to Farenheit, so I didn't have ti mess with it. Temperature might have been off by a degree, but I didn't do anything to calibrate yet. If I know it is only one degree off, I can also add that in my head. Nothing worth dinging them over.I am not saying other reviewers are wrong, I just don't know if they got old models, third-party sellers, or they didn't try hard enough.
