This is a great performance of a variety of Bach's compositions (21 selections)! What is interesting is that the players use historical sackbutts (the original trombone) and cornetti. As usual with Hyperion recordings, The sound is excellent. The cornetti (basically a woodwind with a trumpet mouthpiece) sound close to the tone of a modern Eb cornet. The sackbuts sound somewhat similar to a modern trombone. As I read in someone else review "Bach's music exists on a variety of planes, and the same piece played on different instruments gives a radically different result." This is became obvious to my ears, and this CD is an excellent example. I have heard some of these selections presented quite differently on other CD's and it was amazing to here them presented with voice and period intrument. There are one or 2 selections that don't work, but overall this is an excellent and interesting presentation for those who love Bach.Although this is probably not a good choice for someone new to Bach it is Highly Recommended for those who love to explore his Genius!
