Alaffia’s Authentic African Black Soap is made from a centuries-old recipe of handcrafted shea butter and West African palm oil. Saponification is provided by adding ashes to the hot oils, then cooking it for six hours. The last step is curing the soap in the sun for three weeks, resulting in a gentle hand and body wash.

The scent is more minty than anything. It’s not what you’d expect from an authentic African black soap. The product is made of African mint and the co-founder’s husband is African. There isn’t mint in authentic African black soap. Neither does this product contain plantain like the authentic. The product is very drying for the skin. It’s a must to oil and lotion immediately after bathing/showering. If you don’t, you will regret it. No sitting around to air dry. That goes for Black people as well as non-Black people. My family was perfect for testing this product. Unlikely to buy again. I like that the ingredients are legible and simple though. Read more
The smell was fine but the fact it made my hair so dry and knotty was weird. I have naturally wavy/curly(ish) hair and it completely killed my texture. Felt like I washed it with a bar of body soap and could not even run my fingers through it with conditioner, super wet, sexy dry, or while drying. Plus while I was straightening it (since it killed my curl and looked atrocious) it has some weird heavy film to it. I usually use Matrix shampoo and conditioner and my bottles were running low so I thought it may be a good time to try the switch. One wash and will not be keeping it. I heard it was great for hair growth and I’m just not willing to suffer through a bottle or two to find out. Read more
I bought this after someone had mentioned it made their hair thicker. I always “shed” so I ordered this to see if it would help. I’ve used almost the entire bottle now and I will say my hair looks very healthy. The growth may take some more time but my hair feels fuller at my scalp so I think it’s actually working! Way less “shedding” since I started using this.My only little tiny complaint is that a daily wash is definitely needed with this, for my hair type at least. The next day my hair is already quite greasy again. This is also a pro just because there seems to be less stripping of natural oils with this shampoo. Washing it daily does not make it feel dry or brittle by any means, but it may not work for someone who wants to wash their hair less. Read more
Not to fond of the smell, needs more lemongrass scent.First use i was mortified! I looked like a straw haystack, i couldn't brush my hair out, my hair is naturally thin and wispy, this shampoo made it raw and coarse. Used some hair oil to tame it. Second washing was a couple days later my hair was fuller, easier to brush not so traumatizing and my third washing was interesting to say the least..brushing my hair while it was wet, a bit daunting but thicker and healthier. When my hair dried it stayed fuller as well as silky, like my hair used to be when I was younger. Im impressed with this shampoo. Also I've been washing my face with it, it does give my skin a bit of a youthful glow. Read more
I have used these products since they debuted in Whole Foods in 2003. I always feel clean but not dry. The all in one is great for my sensitive skin and low porosity curly hair. My whole family uses this product; additionally, our Bichon always looks whiter when I use this or the liquid black soap to clean his sensitive skin. Read more
I hate to be negative but this is the second try at the liquid black soap, this one doesn't lather at all so I keep squirting and trying to do more than one area at a time.As far as burning my eyes as the previous brand did, no burning by this one.As far as my skin, after a week of use, my skin doesn't feel any better. My tea tree liquid body soap seems to do me much better.I was hoping since I have a very dark complexion. I dis buy the soap bars from different seller and they do a much better job.Well, I will keep using it since I purchased TWO bottles so will see Read more
I wouldn't even call this soap. No suds; you'd have to use 1/4 of the bottle just to get one decent bath. What a waste of money. Read more
They must have changed their recipe. They must have at least doubled the water content. Read more
