My son is almost two and he LOVES this toy! It is his absolute favorite and he wants to play "choo choo" all the time. That being said, I'm sure the batteries on his train die faster than a train with a more average amount of use. However, the batteries die excessively fast. I literally have to change the batteries at least once a day or the train will no longer move! What's even more obnoxious is there are EIGHT teeny tiny screws that have to be painstakingly removed in order to change the batteries. I actually had to go purchase a very small screwdriver to even be able to removed the screws at all. Changing the batteries takes a solid 15 minutes because of the EIGHT screws and the overall not user friendly design of this toy! All the while my son is crying for his "choo choo." Additionally, we have the mine train track and expansion kit. The expansion kit is virtually worthless as the edges of the track are not high enough to keep the train on track. It is constantly getting de-railed. My husband and I will be very happy when our son outgrows this "choo choo" phase because this toy is one of the least parent friendly toys on the market! My grandson loves this train. It is easy for a 22 month old to place on the tracks, etc. i need to turn it to autorun for him, but he is happy just to push it around the track.Addendum:2/09/17. The train had become very sluggish, so I ordered new batteries and replaced the originals with Duracell ordered from Amazon. Unfortunately that did not solve the problem; now the train does not say all its phrases nor is it motorized. Not sure why this happened, but is very disappointing for both him and me. It was the first toy he looked for every day. Addendum: I am beginning to think this train is just defective. Despite multiple new batteries, now none of its functions are working. It refuses to even turn on. I always purchase Vtech, but am very disappointed in this product. Unfortunately it is my grandson's favorite and he finds it very frustrating. My son loves all the Smart Wheels, and especially loves this train. It's motorized! Hoo boy! There's a switch on the side to change between motorized and manual (and very precariously placed in between them is the off button) so he can easily switch between rolling the train around on his own as he does with his other Smart Wheels, or... setting it to motorized and squealing in delight as it gets stuck on a wall. That's easily the downside to the poor train: if he hits a wall -- or any surface, to be honest -- he'll pound his little train face into it over and over again trying to turn around and the ensuing noise is LOUD. Headache-inducing loud. You can't let the train go more than a minute without either turning him (or repeatedly telling your toddler to turn him) lest he get stuck and jitter himself against the wall ad infinitum. I can't bear to get rid of the train just for that though, my son loves him too much -- and the motor eats up battery power so within a couple weeks he's reduced to just manual play. That may be an issue if your little one only wants a motorized train, but for kiddos who like their trains either way, you'll be glad to know that our train keeps singing and talking weeks, months even after the batteries get too low to run the motor. I bought this one to replace the freight train that came with the V-tech mountain train adventure and broke after 3 weeks of being abused by toddler. This train is motorized, but not powerful enough to go up the hill on the tracks, even if you take off the cart! Like the product a lot. It was actually a replacement for the one that came with the original train track kit and my son broke that one. (he pretty much tortured the poor train and pulled it everywhere with it ON, stripping the gears.) I was sad that it wasn't the exact same one that came with the original track but I was unable to find the original without purchasing the whole track again. This item works great but does not make the same noises as the original freight train. I would recommend this product, very well made and works like a charm. We've had pretty good experience with these trains. We had one out of a batch of 4 that failed and had to be replaced. After some initial VTech frustration because they told us they wouldn't be replacing a 2-month old train, they corrected course and gave us a freebie. This train is really fun to play with. Be careful not to let it get string or hair caught in the wheels when it’s moving as that is almost impossible to fix and can ruin the self propelling feature. My son loves to build a train track with me and watch the train to around and around. We go through a lot of triple A battery’s but it’s worth it for the fun! Read more

My son loved his mountain railroad and was devastated when his two trains quit working. Bought this as a replacement and it worked great at first. However, by the end of the first week it quit being able to climb and then the motorized mechanism quit working all together. My son loves his train set but gets upset when not even one of his three trains will work. I would not recommend buying this product. Read more
