I bought this for long term food storage. According to the USDA, powdered milk can be stored indefinitely. It's hard to find powdered WHOLE milk. What you find in the stores is always non-fat. This is a great product and the cans are huge. I ordered two cans. I was very disappointed that one of the can's was heavily dented. I should have sent it back, but it's too much hassle. I'll just use it and buy another later. Sending me a dented can won this review 3 stars. And no, it wasn't UPS's fault. The box was not dented or damaged in any way. It was sent this way from the shipper. Read more
This gets one star because I was sent a tin that has an expiration dates in 4 months. I’m unhappy about this the expiration dates on stuff like this should not be sent out within the same year Read more
Excellent! I never thought that powdered milk could taste so close to real whole milk. (Probably because no US manufacturer MAKES powdered whole milk.) It's not something that we'll drink on a daily basis, but it has a long shelf life (date was about 10 months out and it's a 'BEST by' date, and other reviewers have attested to it tasting the same after even being OPEN for 4 years or so). Great item for your emergency pantry supply--whether it's a natural disaster or just waking up Saturday morning after promising pancakes to the kids the night before and discovering you have no milk! I will be keeping a few cans on hand at all times.*Excellent coffee creamer. Waaayyy better than CoffeeMate. Tastes so good in coffee I could almost use it INSTEAD of half n half. I think I will! It has it's own characteristic flavor, but it's subtle and I actually like it. Plus is that it doesn't water down the coffee like adding whole milk does. Read more
Ok, I admit I was very skeptical when I made this purchase. However, I use milk very infrequently & needed to have it on hand occasionally for cooking & baking, so I took the plunge & purchased this item. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised - the flavor, texture & color all score a 10 out of 10 on my personal food rating scale... I like to think I have a very keen sense of taste & when mixed with bottled or filtered water this tastes like real milk !!! I'd like to suggest that anyone finding this to have an off-taste try it without the chlorine or chloramine the city is adding to your tap water... I think you too will be pleasantly surprised. Finally, I did note other reviews were concerned about the short remaining shelf life on the canisters they received. I have solved that by keeping it in the fridge 100% of the time. My canister expires in 9 months (which is really probably more like a year anyway) & I believe I could keep this in the fridge indefinitely & it would still be fine... As a single person, I extend the life of many food items that are not typically refrigerated by keeping them in the fridge (e.g , cooking oil, peanut butter, peanuts, etc.) Bottom line: This product scores a perfect 10 for me !!! Most of the time when I buy milk, some of it goes to waste. I'd been reluctant to buy dry milk, because the only type I'd ever used was the low fat Carnation brand that ends up tasting like milky water. The NIDO on Amazon roughly worked out to what buying a comparable amount of fresh milk would be for me, but because I can prepare it on demand, it doesn't go to waste like it would by buying fresh milk.To prepare milk, you add one part of power to four parts water, but if I need something heavier -- like cream for a recipe -- I just use more powder. I use it for making homemade paneer, kefir, cooking, and baking. I don't drink milk on its own or add it to my coffee or tea, but the taste is good enough that you could easily use it for that, too. I started out as a bit of a Peak snob when it came to dry whole milk powder. The Peak was what I was first introduced to and it seemed totally worth the higher cost. Only thing that bothered me was the strong aftertaste it seemed to have no matter how I mixed it or used it. Super creamy, yes, but with that aftertaste I couldn't stand to drink it as milk or even in my coffee. Nido is cheaper, easier to find, and to my surprise and delight it doesn't have the aftertaste or 'off' sort of taste I got used to with Peak. It is not as rich and creamy, though, which means using more to get the consistency of Peak. About twice as much, actually. This stuff makes great ice cream, though, or even just chocolate milk for drinking. Perfect in coffee. For the taste I can deal with using twice as much, especially since it comes in such a big can. I'd say it probably works out about even with the cost of Peak when all is said and done, but I do find myself using this much more often in many more ways simply because the taste is just that good.
