I’ve been meaning to write a review for this sunscreen but I have not made the time to do so until now. I’ve been looking for sunscreen that does not leave that white film on my black skin ; I read an article in O magazine where experts ( payed for by the sunscreen manufactures) list their top list of sunscreen that is great for black skin that does not leave us looking like freaks, I’m sad to report the ones I tried on that list were very expensive and did absolutely nothing; that’s not true, they did somethings: they cause me to screamed and mourned my hard earn money. I even tried La prairie which is suppose to be the best of the best. This one did nothing but invited all the pores on my face to a party. This line of Neutrogena sunscreen is a god send for my face. I live In Northern California and I go on long hikes with dog at least three times a week. My melanin soldiers along with this sunscreen keeps my skin protected without the creepy white film.The best way I explained to my white friends how the sun feels on black skin vs white skin is to imagine laying in the sun under a black sheet then try the same thing with a white sheet. Update 2019:I purchased about four bottles in 2018 for a Carribean trip and my initial testing left me with a rave review. The bottles said they expired in 2020 so I brought the remainders with me for my Carribean trip this year and I'll say it still worked very well. It didn't work quite as well as the first year since, despite following the same procedure as before, I did get a baby burn on the second day at the beach. Nothing as bad as what I got several years back, but enough to tell me that I should probably discard these after one year. They don't seem to last quite as long as is listed on the bottle.Original Review:I just returned from a trip to the Carribean and I barely have a tan after being in the sun for 5 days straight. The last time I was in Dominican Republic, I was severely burned after one day in the sun even after reapplying every two hours.This worked immediately and it stayed put for several hours. I applied it and went straight into the ocean and it did not come off. I reapplied a few hours later and didn't even have a hint of a burn (I burn easily). I play an extremely fun and addictive game called Pickleball (I know it's a stupid name) outdoors here in Southern California. I'm playing in direct sunlight and roasting in stagnate summer heat on a small, tennis like court for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. I also happen to be heavily black & grey tattooed so I'm also looking for the best protection for the ink I have exposed.With that said, this sunscreen is hands down the best I have ever used and here's why.1. It's the highest SPF I could find in a sunscreen at 70.2. Protects against the UVA and UVB light spectrum.3. PABA free.4. NON-GREASY - For me this is a big deal. Having greasy hands in any way while holding a paddle grip totally sucks.5. Update: I've seen this item at Walmart within the last week; and the containers there had a lot number and expiration date stamped on them. I checked the container bought through Amazon again; but there is no expiration date or lot number on it. So, my one star rating is for the item bought though Amazon only, not for Neutrogena Beach Defense in general.There were two problems here. First, this was shipped in a padded envelope. The top popped off and spilled out most of the contents. The only thing that can be said for the shipping is that the envelope didn't leak. Since the lid just pops off and isn't well secured, this probably isn't a suitable product for shipping. The product itself was even more of a disappointment. The only reason I bought Beach Defense instead of a similar product from another manufacturer is that last year an expiration date was stamped on the container. This year I don't see an expiration date. I've already had one melanoma; so i don't like having to gamble that the sunscreen hasn't been sitting in some storage facility with no temperature control for many months and become completely ineffective. I actually kind of want to cry. I had some little burns the first time I used it but I though maybe I had missed. Then today after being fully covered both my mother and I got really burnt. We were only in the sun an hour each time and it didn’t work that long. Read more

I like Neutrogena but had to stop using it as the ingredients included things that are simply not good for health. As with most sunscreen lotion makers they need to start removing chemicals and making it more natural and yet protective. Read more

My Medical Doctor recommended three sun screens to me. Only three actually fully protect the skin from harmful sun rays according to the Doctor. Beach Defense is one of the three, and the one I can afford to purchase. I have been using this sun screen for three years now. I spend a considerable time outdoors, swimming, biking and hiking. At my advanced age I must be careful to avoid over exposure to the sun, but I love being active outdoors. This product allows me to be outside in the sun, daily. Best I can determine, it has done well in preventing the occurrence of any sort of early skin cancer development. Really good, smells nice. Bought this for a clammy person as they generally sweat up before even putting this on but because this is made for water resistance, once it's on, even if you sweat it is still protecting you and of course protects in the water. Very effective. Read more
