It has enough space to fit the snack for school, which is usually a sandwich, a bag of chips and a juice pack, there's space left in case you need to bring something else. I actually bought this to use as a bag for my daughter's LeapPad, headphones, and accessories. It is perfect! There is plenty of room in the main compartment for her LeapPad and headphones, and the smaller pocket holds the charger and all of her games with room to spare. I love that it has a strap so she doesn't get tired of carrying it.If you were using this as a lunch box, I'd say it would fit a fair amount of food (enough for an adult). Ok I got this for my daughters lunch bag and about 3 months in the zipper messed up so she really loved the bag apparently it got alot of compliments on it being cute, I really was hopeful that the 2cnd one would be better but it didn't last as long as the first one. So I have to say my experience wasn't the best and both times it was the zipper! My daughter was in 5th grade and has always been very good to her belongings so I don't know? The bag is smaller than I thought it would be. I had gotten it to replace an old bag I have that is falling apart.To go with this new bag I had gotten a 'Bentology' bento box set and that fits just about perfectly in the penguin bag, to give a better idea of the size the bag holds. Leaving it unzipped I'm sure I could fit a little bit more into the main part of the bag.It feels durable and nicely water resistant so spills outside won't get in and spills inside won't get out.I really like that it can be carried as a backpack too. But I just had to because I think this is one of my first purchases from Amazon where I am incredibly happy with the quality and look of the product. I bought this as a gift for my little sister who has a love for anything penguin. And let me just say she absolutely loves the bag and she is using it not just as a lunch bag but as a purse as well! The bag is very versatile it can be a sling on bag, a tote bag and even a backpack!
