I have been getting my hair colored at the salon for years until the last year or so. My hair started falling out and after getting all these tests ran at the doctors office I couldn't pinpoint the problem. Until I was so embarrassed about going to the salon and decided to start doing it myself. I tried herbatint, which has low ammonia 3%. To my surprise, no hair fell out. I was so thrilled. After using this for a year, my hair has finally grown back and it is not thin anymore. As far as the color goes, I just use it to color my grey. No more fancy highlights for me since I can't do them at home. I do add two N colors together and it gives me a little bit of a hightlight. To cover grey you HAVE to get the N series. I have medium brown hair with a little bit of golden highlights. I use 4n and 6n. I mix 6 parts 4n to 2 parts 6N. My natural color is a darker brown. It does come out a little dark at first but will lighten over several washes. If you get too light a color, after several washes it will be too light. It took me a long time and several different boxes of color to get it right for me. I now just do touch ups on my roots every couple of months for the new growth and I love it. Read more

I purchased this dye in 6N Dark blonde looking for a natural color product. I have in the past paid for salon organic color, because I am sensitive to chemicals and hate the smell of conventional dye.For starters the ingredients right away list Propylene Glycol as the 2nd ingredient and hydrogen peroxide developer. These ingredients alone can be irritating, but the they top it off with alcohol and sulfates in the shampoo. Topped off with fragrance and alcohol in the conditioner. The listing was advertised as "no alcohol or fragrance", but therected it is on the label. Liar Liar!! This is no better than the $4 box at the dollar store.I am sad that I wasted my money on this. Please make sure you read the label first. Read more

I have been using Herbatint hair color for over 20 years now. I love it. I mix 50/50 8C Light Ash Blonde with 7N Blonde together and have absolutely no trace of brassiness on my greying brunette hair. The combination is fantastic. I never was very pleased with the outcome of my hair color using other brands, but, Herbatint is a winner!! My husband never complimented me on my haircolor until I began mixing 8C & 7N. He said it looks like you finally got your hair color looking very natural looking. I would have to say I agree. Also, I just began applying a few drops of Jojoba Oil on my hair too and it's so shiny, smooth and straight, which is usually such a problem for my hair! My hair looks wonderful. I wished I knew about both years ago instead of experimenting with so many different hair colors to get rid of that hideous orange/red tint in my hair. Read more

Covers all grays, doesn't reek of ammonia, perfect color for Asian hair, love not using as much chemicals. It's harder to apply without a squeezy bottle, you need your own applicator brush, but once you get the hang of it, it works well. Important to note that you don't have to use the whole box--you can use just a little for root touch ups because you use your own container to mix the solution and can re-cap it for future use. I was very happy with the grey hair coverage and the color of the 2N. I prefer dark, dark brown, and that is what this gave me. My natural color is dark brown and, of course, stupid grey at the roots especially at the temples and at my stupid cowlick in front. For people with medium or shorter hair, you can get two uses out of this!!!They should let consumer know it doesn't come with an applicator. There is a separate set to buy with a brush and mixing bowl that can be re-used over and over. I improvised this time, but I'm buying the mixing set for future use.I will continue to buy this excellent Vegan product. Read more

Despite choosing the wrong color (I am a natural redhead with gasp! gray hair) the product is good. It did cover all my gray hair and it was easy to use. It does offer good coverage and it did not make my hair feel overly processed. However, I was left with a lot of deep, almost burgundy, color that did not look natural. It was a bit brash. Bottom line, choose a shade or two lighter than you think you need. Read more

Please do not be fooled as I was by the pronouncement of "all natural" ingredients. It is not so! PPD is still in this hair dye. Currently I am fighting a severe allergy due to the ingredients which had little to no effect on my skin on my arms, but reacted violently with the skin on my head. Read more

I have always been sensitive to salon formulas so thought I would try this based on reviews. Although the color is great - I still got blisters on my scalp and lymph nodes behind my ears swelled. So I still had a reaction to it and was hoping to find a product that would not irritate my scalp. Read more

The coverage was great, no sign of greys or previous colour. I hadn't coloured my hair for many weeks prior to using this but oh boy did it take !! So much that initially, my hair looked black.. I left it on for the recommended time and am now trying my utmost to reduce the colour and lighten it.. My hair is soft and feels great... but this depth of colour just isn't for me with fair skin. A little darker than expected but it did cover all the grey. Have been having my hair coloured with aveda for a while but don't always have the time to go so this is a great alternative as it has mostly natural ingredients also. As the hair dresser explained at Aveda, hair dye does need a little amount of 'chemicals' in order to make the colour set (unless using Henna). This brand has the smallest amount I have found so far. Some other reviews have stated they had bad burns from this hair dye. I did not experience any discomfort and of course all hair dye instructions recommended doing a strand test first to avoid such problems! My hair is shining and feels great (recommend their shampoo and conditioner also). I have used this hair dye for the last 25 yrs and love it. Never tempted to stray as it is not only fabulous colour but it has never damaged my hair. People I meet love the colour and always surprised that it has been produced by home colour. Read more
